Hey guys, first time poster and complete rookie about scopes. Bought my first real scope that was over $100 and realized that there is a flaw with the lens.

The scope is Hensoldt Fero and extensionally it looks perfect. There is what looks like an air pocket on the lens that faces the shooter. This air pocket creates a blur.

What are my options to fix it if any?

Except for sending it back to the person you bought it from, there is little you can do. The Z24s were made in the 1980s and are German mil surplus. I have three of them myself as they are excellent optics for an AR. I don't know anyone who repairs them as I've never heard of one with a problem before. Sounds like you have a lens element separation.

PS If you can find another Z24 for parts, you can swap out the ocular lens that has the separation. You can see there is a castle nut that hold the lenses in place. Good luck!

Hudisco would be my first contact.

So is this scope covered?

Any idea of the cost if they are not?

Sorry for all the questions, extremely new to this stuff

Re: Hensoldt Fero Z24 lens issue for first scope user

No, the scope is not covered - it's 26 years old and mil surplus from another country!!! Nate at Hudisco.com is the US distributor for Hensoldt. He might have the name of a person who repairs the Z24, and that person can tell you what it would cost to replace the ocular lens.

If you can find another Z24 for parts, you can contact US Optics who might swap the lenses for you. I know they've worked on other brands of scopes in the past.

PS The spot in the image seems to me to be a little small to create a blurred image. These scopes do not have a diopter adjustment for your eyes. Do this: Have a couple other people look through the scope and tell you whether the image is blurred. You may need corrective lenses, or if you have them already, you may be looking through a part of your glasses that doesn't work with the Z24 (happened to me until I got a new prescription).

Re: Hensoldt Fero Z24 lens issue for first scope user

One eyed jack - thanks for your response.

Actually - The scope made me doubt my vision. I'm 29 and do not wear any correct lenses and have though my eye sight was pretty good. Had my girlfriend look through it and she saw a distortion on the left.

I was hoping I could find someone in Charlotte with the same FERO scope to compare with no luck.

Side question -
The lines and the image are much clearer at longer distance. When I tried to focus the rectal at closer images, the images are fuzzy along with the lines.

I have a 4 power Trilux sight I got for $100 to go on a FAL and that sight is very easy to put on any distance.

I also checked out the new model ACOG's at the NRA convention last year and had no issues also.

Any idea why I might be having this problem?

Re: Hensoldt Fero Z24 lens issue for first scope user

I don't understand what you meant when you said you tried to focus the reticle at closer distances. The Hensoldt Fero ZF24 has NO adjustments at all except the turrets. You must have an earlier version with a diopter adjustment on the side.

Here is an image of the earlier Hensoldt ZF4 (not ZF24) scope with a diopter adjustment on the left side:

Here is an image of the later Fero ZF24 with an illuminator mount on the left side, but no diopter adjustment:

I've never had the ZF 4 version; if that is the model you have, then the diopter adjustment lens could be damaged inside, or is not moving far enough.

The diopter adjustment is used only to focus the reticle. Once the reticle is in focus (look at the blue sky and adjust the side dial until the reticle is sharp), there is no adjustment for image sharpness because it's only a 4x scope. If the images are still blurry after you have made the diopter adjustment, then the objective lens may need to be adjusted by someone who knows what they are doing.

Here is the manual with operating instructions: http://www.eyry.eu/miltec/documents/g3sm.pdf

Re: Hensoldt Fero Z24 lens issue for first scope user

I have a 1988 FERO version, model 3. If I point the scope at something 100 yards away it looks focused. If I look at 10 yards away the image looks focused more so and the line of the rectal are blurred.

If I do this same thing with the Trilux sight there is not difference between far and close distances.

Re: Hensoldt Fero Z24 lens issue for first scope user

The reticle sharpness should not change when you look close and far away. 10 yards may be too close though for the scope to focus well on a target; I'm returning to NV this weekend and will look through my Fero Z24 and see I have a similar problem at 10 yards.

That would be great, thanks

No chance any one know what size butler creek flip up lens cover would fit this scope.
