Petition Filed Today to Ban Use of Lead Ammunition and Fishing Tackle – Conference Call at 2 pm ET

To join the call dial 212 381 2929, the participant code is 66100520.

ABC formally petitioned the EPA today requesting a ban on the use of toxic lead in hunting ammunition and fishing tackle. We are joined in this effort by Center for Biological Diversity (CBD), Association of Avian Veterinarians, Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, and the hunters’ group Project Gutpile in asking for the ban under the Toxic Substances Control Act, which regulates dangerous chemicals in the United States.

The petition references nearly five hundred peer-reviewed scientific studies, pulled together by ABC’s Dr. Michael Fry and CBD that starkly illustrate the widespread dangers from lead ammunition and fishing tackle. As all of you know, lead is an extremely toxic substance that is dangerous to people and wildlife even at low levels. Exposure can cause a range of health effects, from acute poisoning and death to long-term problems such as reduced reproduction, inhibition of growth and damage to neurological development. In the United States, 3,000 tons of lead are shot into the environment by hunting every year, another 80,000 tons are released at shooting ranges, and 4,000 tons are lost in ponds and streams as fishing lures and sinkers.

At least 75 wild bird species are poisoned by spent lead ammunition, including bald eagles, golden eagles, ravens and endangered California condors. Despite being banned in 1992 for hunting waterfowl, spent lead shotgun pellets continue to be frequently ingested by swans, cranes, ducks, geese, loons and other waterfowl. These birds also consume lead-based fishing tackle lost in lakes and rivers, often with deadly consequences.

You will have an opportunity to hear more about the science behind the petition and the commercial availability of alternative, lead-free bullets and fishing gear, and to discuss how BCA members can get involved on a conference call at 2 pm today. To join the call dial 212 381 2929, the participant code is 66100520.

Re: Here they come! nationwide lead ban petition

WTF....The BP oil spill did more damaged in 100+ days then we hunters could do in the next 100 years...these people need to get a life. Rant done

Re: Here they come! nationwide lead ban petition

80,000 tons is billions of bullets shot at the range! That's pretty impressive.

I am going to venture a guess and say the data they are presenting is heavily skewed in their favor. Common sense would lend it self to the other side of the argument. People have been slinging lead for literally hundreds of years. If we were going to create an environmental disaster it should already be present.

Re: Here they come! nationwide lead ban petition

To continue with what The338LM said, 80,000 tons of bullets is about 6.7 billion .308 rounds or about 4.9 billion .45 rounds. Those numbers seem a touch high to me. I also would agree that there are much bigger environmental disasters to worry about.

Hey, Kids; it's not like we never saw it comin'...

OH, FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD!!! these leftist wackos will never stop.

Re: Here they come! nationwide lead ban petition

California's already got the lead ban covering about 3/4 of the state, all those damn condors keep dying from eating the carcasses of dead animals us hunters leave behind with our lead bullets and shots.

Re: Here they come! nationwide lead ban petition

PLEASE... Can we not find a large island somewhere, full of beautiful fluffy animals and nice trees.... Then send all these gun hating, tree loving, patchouli oil wearing, Granola eating, left wing fuck nut hippy bastards..

Shit will they leave us alone... OK done for today

It is rediculous in California. There has actually not been one documented case of a condor dying from ingesting lead or even becoming sick. Half of the "Condor Zone" they have marked in this state doesn't even have condors in it. It was passed as law simply on a "what if" or "could possibly happen" basis.

Re: Here they come! nationwide lead ban petition

Call them crazy if you want. But what they are doing is effective. Already a real problem in CA. And they are coming our way. So get ready and do something. Or call them crazy. Either way they are coming. Tom.

Re: Here they come! nationwide lead ban petition

I'm not calling 'em crazy. I prefer the term "Lead Heads".

Its up to us to stop them. Action, not words.

Re: Here they come! nationwide lead ban petition

Has there ever actually been a documented case of birds dying from lead poisoning....aside from the obvious getting shot with a shotgun? They always lose me with the arguement of lead poisoning the water since lead is a naturally occuring element in nature that I'm sure could be found above, below and underneath the water table. Shooting lead does nothing but redistributes what is already out there. Birds and fish eating lead? Lead is so dense it's not just going to set on top of a sandy or muddy bottom of a lake, nor is it going to float above the rocks and pebbles of a stream. It's going to work its way down into the soil until it hits hard pack or between the pebbles until it settles into a crack in the rocks where it will spend eternity. If anything, they should be petitioning to bring lead shot BACK to waterfowling as it's much more effective than steel. I hate to think that some company that manufactures some of the non toxic shot is in some way behind or supporting this from behind the scenes, but it wouldn't surprise me either.
