Hey All

Hey everyone I am new here and have been lurking around for a week or two.. Anyway I have a quick question about which remington 308 I should get... I have a choice between the remington 700 SPS Tactical or the remington 700 SPS with the 26" heavy barrel? Which one would yall prefer? Note I will be using it to hunt and maybe shoot comps with...

Re: Hey All

SPS tactical right out of the box has a little better stock. The stock that comes on the sps varmint is junk, I would go with the tactical. IMO

Hunting and some comps cover a lot of territory. A little more info could go a long way to help you.

What sort of competition did you have in mind. Plenty of info here on Tactical, you are in luck if you are thinking of NRA Prone matches. Bayou Rifles is not too far from you - bayourifles.org for more info. Just south of hwy 6 on 288 1st and 3rd Sundays, but the 600 yd match scheduled for today got rained out.

Most hunting here in Texas is from a stand, so the heavy barrel would not weigh you down too much, and would probably be preferable for competition unless you want to run-and-gun.

Others here will probably have a different take......

Re: Hey All

I really dont know about comps yet as i have never really shot that long of a distance as of yet... I mainly hunt in liberty county and we have some long road shots but thats about it... The main reason im looking for another rifle is because i didnt do alot of thinking and went and bought a Remington 770 with the stainless barrel and camo stock in a 7mm rem mag and I know I know I should have just bought a 700 in the first place but i wanted something fast and that was in my Price range at the time... But with incometax coming in I can finally buy what I want.... Also I am not home much because I am currently at Fort Knox, Kentucky for AIT...

Re: Hey All

If you're hunting or carrying a lot I'd chose the tactical with the short barrel.Longer range competition may be helped by the long barrel from a velocity standpoint. Both stocks are kinda flimsy for any serious work but that's easily corrected.
Just saying...

Re: Hey All

Welcome..

If you are going to hunt.. get a hunting rifle (thin barrel profile, good hunting caliber, lightweight and compact). If you have that with the 770, then I would say do some research on here and choose the purpose built profile rifle that suits your comp rifle needs.

Re: Hey All

The varmint profile (0.82) barrel in 26" ends up being heavy. I have the same profile barrel on my Police, but i dont mind it too much.

When hunting and hiking with it, a biathlon sling really helps.
