In booking a lot of flights for Europe to/from the Middle East/Central Asia over the years, Aeroflot is always one of the cheapest carriers. I have always gladly paid more to avoid both connecting through Russia as well as their overall abysmal safety record and service. They would have to pay me to fly on one of their planes, and my rate is $50/km flown.

The wife an I did an internal flight from Petersburg to Moscow on one of these about 15 years ago....scary shit. Nothing was to standard, couldn't fit a laptop case in the overhead. I kept thinking there should be chickens running around on board

That thing looks like it's missing the barrels out the nose for the gunner!

I never rode in a Tupolev, but have entirely more time in Soviet era built Antonovs traveling all around Afghanistan than I care to think about. A good workhorse and we had Ukrainian pilots who knew the aircraft well, but that didn't prevent an aircraft loss we took because Afghans like crossing runways in trucks while an aircraft just touched down. Lost a friend in a crash into a mountain too, Ariana Airlines (Afghan national commercial carrier)didn't like flying AN-24s above mountains in snow storms for some reason.
