A while ago I completed a precision build based off of a 16" Noveske Recon barrel and Geisselle SSA-E trigger. I have yet to decide on a permanent but stock for it. Right now it has a Vltor Modstock on it that I pulled off another build. I like the Modstocks and thought I would try it out and see if it would provide the cheek weld I required for my optic combination with this rifle. I am using a USO SN3 for now in a NF 20 moa base until I decide on a dedicated optic, later down the road. My problem, as I suspected, is that my check weld is insufficient. I have a Mapgul PRS on an LR308 variant and am sure I would like it's ar15 cousin on this AR but do not really want the increased weight and size.

Is there a smaller (collapsible size) stock with a higher or adjustable comb? Also what stock would be easily acceptable of a stock pack or some similar stable setup to get the amount of comport needed?

PS: I was going to post up some pics but image shack is no longer free. What is a good site for image sharing? Thanks

There are a variety of options, including the following:

1) a Magpul CTR (compact type, restricted) and a Larue RISR seen here: LaRue Tactical RISR? / CTR Combo | LaRue Tactical (non-height-adjustable riser that buys you an addt'l ~1/2" of comb height...usually works fairly well with optics that are ~1-1/2" from base of the rail to optic centerline on carbine type setups, but YMMV. They are relatively lightweight and not nearly as bulky as the PRS option.);

or

2) either an LMT SOPMOD G2 or any Magpul collapsible stock (incl. the CTR, MOE, ACS, ACS-L, UBR and STR stocks) with the addition of a Battleline Industries SAPR as seen below. These are infinitely more adjustable and offer a ton of options that the RISR doesn't, but they are pricier at ~$140, plus the cost of a stock body.

As for the add-on padding, stock pack, etc., anything is possible with some trial and error, however, because of the charging handle's operation and the need for it to retract fully to properly operate the rifle at even the most collapsed position, most such mods will put the riser/padding too far back to be of much use for getting a solid, consistent, repeatable cheekweld on a carbine type, collapsible stock, thus the design of the RISR and SAPR attachments.

I went from a Vltor Emod to a Magpul CTR with riser to get a better cheekweld and it's perfect. Don't have to buy a Larue riser, magpul has different height clip on risers for $20.

Tinypic.com works great for pic hosting.

How did you get proper operation of your CH running a CTR with a Magpul clip-on riser? Even their lowest, 1/4" riser will interfere with the charging handle retracting without removing/replacing it every time you need to charge the rifle, modding the riser itself to make it shorter, or running the stock at its max length/longest position all the time (or at least when you need to operate the CH).

On my 308 I use a Vltor A5 tube, which is longer and have the stock at it's longest setting because that is my correct LOP. CH doesn't hit the riser. If you were going to run it shorter yes I believe it would hit and you would have to extend the stock any time you wanted to operate the handle.

Thanks guys I will look into those options. I am ashamed to admit i didn't consider the operation of the charging handle. I keep the stock at its maximum LOP. Keep the info coming if anyone has any more.

Will further the recommendations for choosing the CTR/RISR cheekpiece combo, which eliminates CH interference.

It replaced the A1 fixed stock on my WOA 5.56mm SPR.
The scope on this one is a Vortex PST 2.5-10x in an low AD mount. I run the CTR/RISR one notch out from fully collapsed, i.e., one notch from NTCH.
For me, it's perfect, and because it's an MRP there's plenty of rail spacing for a non-cantilevered mount.

More recently, I replaced the SOPMOD on my new LMT MRP 7.62mm LM8 ("slickside") with the same CTR/RISR combo. Scope is a Leupy Mk 6 1-6x, also in a low AD mount. The LM8 is supposedly a smidge lighter than the earlier MWS w/ all the rails; regardless, the CTR/RISR combo is a reasonably light set-up, IMO. Can't say whether the AD mounts are 1" or 1.5" centerline above rail, but once the CTR is set for the correct LOP for eye-relief (again, for me, one setting out from NTCH), there's no head-bobbing or craning to achieve a clear sight picture. It's consistent from shot-to-shot.

The key isn't the RISR CP itself, but the height of the mount you put the scope in - that is, where it places the scope (high or low) relative to your sighting eye once your cheek hits the RISR.

That may take some experiementing and you might have to try different mounts. Fortunately, Brownells is awesome about accepting returns. ;)

Don't laugh, I've used a 3/16" pice of black A/C tubing insulation and a couple of tie-wraps to add just a little bit on a JP-07 with an ARFX stock.

I don't care what it looks like, the stuff is soft, isn't temp sensitive, when it gets funky, take it off and put on a new $0.50 piece back on.

Use black tie-wraps, doesn't look that bad, AND it works.
