Loaded up some 308 rounds with the new CFE223. I only had Hodgon data to work with. I started from min. and worked up to max. loads in .5 increments. Got to say this powder looks like it has potential. I only worked up to max published charge but I think there is more left. I was getting 2730+ fps with 175 smk's and no pressure signs. Being a novice, I would like to see what the experts can do. The measurements were to ouside edges. I think of myself as a decent shot. So does anybody have input on the strings with horizontal spread. I was working on Varget loads as well and these are where i had the spread.

Re: Hodgon CFE 223 range report and analysis help.

Since you obviously have some Varget laying around try 44.1 and the 175smk, with a COAL of 2.80. I 5r loved it when I had that rifle.

If you are going to run a real test for accuracy you may want to make the powder increases by .3g from min to max. If you have access to a chrono that will provide you with even more good data to compare to the groups you get.

Caseyru,

I am also playing with the same powder (Alliant 2000MR). Both are made by st marks in florida for the two companies.

I too have found an accuracy node at 47.5gr with LC brass, Win LR primers, and seating 178AMAX at 2.80 COAL.

When you get around to chronoing these loads, you should find about a 90-120fps advantage over Varget...according to range reports for 2000MR.

I'll be shooting at 200 & 300 yards next to obtain drops and then back-calculate muzzle velocities.

I've loaded more with 47.5 grains. I will now test 200 and 600yards. Will post results.

Actually i did cronograph. I just wrote the results for 47 and 47.5 since they performed best.

Load specs: fired Win. brass, 47.5 grains CFE223,CCI br2, .003 neck tension and 175 smk's, COL 2.828

I shot your load today at the range. I did two loads, 47.5 & 47.4
Both groups were 2"w x 1.8"h, I like the 47.5 group best. I'm going to tinker with the OAL a bit.

Oh by the way this was at 300yds.

On a funny note, when I was adjusting my spotting scope a turkey walks right in front of my target, to bad the RSO was standing there.

Way to go! I am picking up my rifle from the smith tomorrow. Had a brake installed. Gave him some of these rounds to shoot. He said he shot .25" in a 10-15 mph wind. I will next test in .1 grain increments.

If I load it to fit a mag or 2.80 or tighter, the groups spread, once I go back to .010 of lands then I keep .5MOA
