Can anybody tell me why or why they think Hornady does not make a .308 175/178 factory load.

Their 168 Amax and 168 BTHP Tap Precision is great stuff as far as accuracy and repeatability. It seems they would make a match load with their 178 to compete with FGMM. I know they make the Superformance but that load is hit and miss from the research I have done. Anyone know if they plan on making this?

    k9222,

Because the 168 grain AMAX at 2,750FPS outperforms 178 grain AMAX and 175 grain SMK loads to 800 yards and matches them at 1,000 yards?

One of the reasons I ask is I'm looking for a round for my 18.5" build that won't drop into the 2500 range but still work at 800 to 1,000.

How well do you think it will perform below 2750. I figure with my tight bore 18.5" the 168 Amax should be runnning around 2620-2640.

If it does not work I will probably just shoot Corbon/SMK 175's

Everytime I talk to them I bring it up but for now the Superformance 178 load is it. I talked to the production guys at SHOT while we were working the booth and tried to let them know it would be a winner. They usually listen so we will have to keep and eye over the next year or so.

The 168 AMAX load is good but I would rather have a 178 BTHP.

Thats what I figured. It would be nice to have a 178 BTHP Factory Load. Hopefully it will happen.

I just chronographed some 178 Superformance from my 18" LR-308 today...average FPS was 2650. 168 FGMM was about 2550. Hope this helps.

Is the LR-308 a gas gun? That seems to be low for both. What is your location and altitude?

I'm at a low altitude around my location, so I have seen the average for 168 factory load from a 18" bolt to be anywhere from 2620-2640.

I figured it would be faster with the Superformance, but yea thats real good if its a standard load.

    Re: Hornady 175/178 Factory Load?

The Superformance from a 26" bolt gun is about 2830fps. Chop off a bunch of barrel and add a gas system and 2650fps is not bad. You're not going to get alot of speed from an 18" gas gun with any load. He's getting 2550fps with 168 FGMM which is usually closer to 2700fps from bolt guns with longer barrels.
