I just went out this weak end and broke in my new gap hrt crusader. This rifle is rawly amazing. My best groups of the day were at the end, when I shot a box and a half of hornady's new 178gr superformance match. The problems was I had about 10 miss fires. I check the rounds and it looked like the rifle was striking the primers hard enough. All of the misfires fired the second time I shot them. Has anyone had a problem with this ammo? Maybe it was just a bad box. Other than that, my groups were better than any of the federal gm or corbon I shot. The muzzle velocities were also the most consistent.

Re: Hornady 178gr superformance match

Never had the problem with this ammo because I've never used it, but if they use the Federal 210M primers then I have had this problem with those primers before. Used a different box of primers and they worked fine so it might just be a bad batch. At least they fired the second time and it wasn't wasted ammo...

Re: Hornady 178gr superformance match

yeah, I had a lot of mis-fires with the case of 178's I bought. What's worse is that accuracy of the case I bought was not very good. Accuracy was about equal to the Nosler .308 "match" ammo bought on a two-for-one sale. That crap was all over the place.

I no longer believe that Match ammo means Match Quality. Factory match is shooting over 1.5 MOA (over 2 MOA is common) on a good day. Same rifle will shoot sub-3/4 MOA with hand loads (not even being anal on the reload precision).

I wouldn't go that far. I reload but I shot some Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor Match to test it against my handloads and I got .3-.4 MOA groups VERY consistently. It could be this ammo in particular because most Match ammo is at least good for sub MOA

Yeah, I see your point. The Hornady 168 A-Max match ammo did impress from the start. I was able to shoot the 168 A-Max ammo better than even the FGMM. And the price of the Hornady 168 A-Max match was $12 a box less expensive than the FGMM. Me saying "I no longer believe that Match ammo means Match Quality" isn't quite true. It's these last 2 purchases that have come back to bite me.

Re: Hornady 178gr superformance match

So try it out. They shoot good in my POF. I haven't tried it yet but my team mate says to put the POF on the silenced gas position and the Superformance runs better with it like that die to the pressure curve being different than standard powder.

Re: Hornady 178gr superformance match

I tried 2 boxes and my rifle just didn't like it. No failure to fire, the accuracy just wasn't there for me.

Ps. The velocity was up by 100 fps over the Federal GMM 175.

Re: Hornady 178gr superformance match

yeah - i just figured it would be close or better than the 175 gr smk's... plus I have a 1-10 twist 20"... figured could like the heavier bullet vs. lighter.

You never know until you shoot it.

Re: Hornady 178gr superformance match

Sounds like high primers to me. First hit seats the primer a little deeper, but absorbs some of the blow, second hit sets it off. I'd check for high primers on any remaining rounds.

Damn, you sure are lucky! Tried this with my Steyr SSG and a custom .308 and could not get consistancy. Maybe I need to try this in a 17 pound bench rifle?

Re: Hornady 178gr superformance match

I just hope it was just a bad batch. I will still buy another box to check. Other than the primers, my 22" crusader loved it. My chronometer showed the most consistent muzzle velocities with the hornady. It was shooting the 178's @ 2750fps +/- 15fps. Everything else I shot was +/- 25 or more, and about 150-200fps slower.

Re: Hornady 178gr superformance match

Can some of you guys help me out. Should I have posted this in the range report forum, or is this forum appropriate for the post. It's like I'm a private all over again!
