Would anyone recommend a hornady amax particularly 208gr out of a 300wm for long range hunting. I read a story about a man who took a brown bear at 400 yards with a 300wm loaded with the 208gr but is it recommended?
For Alaska's really big game, bears, and moose, step away from the match bullets, you want penetration and controlled expansion. Barnes bullets are favorites around here, any heavy bonded will do. There's mounds of muscle in a 400+lb bear or 900+lb moose that don't even seem to exist on a 200lb deer. A rib on one of these animals fully grown has more mass than a typical whitetail's shoulder bone.

No! Shooting a brown bear with a 30 caliber rifle is not to be taken lightly. You need a reliable bullet and a perfect shot or you can get into trouble so fast it'll take your breath away. I personally watched a big bear soak up 11 shots from a 300WSM and it was a nightmare. Crappy bullet selection was the only reason it went on like that and the jackass behind the trigger almost got several people killed.
The amax has worked well on deer for me but on brown bear hell no i would be looking at the tsx or partition or another one of the bonded bullets. Those are big tough guys and i want some thing that would not blow up on a shoulder and really piss them off.
