I went out today to do some initial load work up for my new Tikka 595 in 7-08 with a 24" barrel. I wanted a baseline for comparison and when I ordered my bullets and brass I also got a box of the Hornady Superformance 7-08 with the 139gr GMX bullet.

The box lists the muzzle velocity as 2910 fps.

I had only fired 8 rounds when they called a cease fire so that's all I shot of it for now. At 100 yards from the bench. Temp was about 75.

2915
2915
2917
2922
2943
2922
2942
2929

All 8 shots were inside .75". Pretty good stuff.

Says in the original post. It's the GMX http://www.hornady.com/store/GMX/

The bullet isn't what makes the Superformance ammo. It's the powders they are using to get the extra velocity at standard pressures.

Re: Hornady Superformance 7-08 range report

I too have noted very good accuracy from several (all) of the Hornady loads I have tried. They are one of the key reasons why I don't believe in doing load development for hunting purposes.

...And yes, they are on the toasty side. I make a serious effort to ensure they are used in properly operating and clean rifles, to preclude any conditions which might turn a toasty load into snarly one.

Like you, I'd not try to surmise the situation resulting in the primer eviction. But I'd be leaning toward a transient origin that is more related to the rifle than to the ammunition. I'd just keep this in mind and recognize that the really zippy loads can be a tad more demanding on a rifle's underlying condition.
