How Accurate Is Your 10/22?

That's not an LVT barrel, that's a "Target" barrel. The LVT barrels are tapered, Target barrels are .920 straight...you can also pick them out of a crowd with the exterior "spiral".

My 10/22 Target* for comparison:

You’re right I bought my target model as a close out from Cdnn. I was referring to it being a completely factory rifle, the phrasing was confusing. I’m impressed with how good the the newer Ruger barrels are with a tighter chamber. Shows you looked at the picture closely 😉. Nice rifle what do you get for groups? That’s an excellent candidate for Randy at CPC’s magic.

I ended up with a Ruger precision rimfire. My 9 year old loves shooting it but it’s hard for him to work the bolt and maneuver the rifle.

I’m thinking about building him a budget 10/22 plinker. I have always wanted to put one together and it would be a good project for us to do.

I was thinking about using the brownells action, green mountain barrel, bx trigger and Kidd small parts.

What kind of accuracy should I expect out of a budget build like this? Would it be better than a factory 10/22? Would I be better off buying a factory 10/22 and just swapping out the stock?

Thanks! Any advice is greatly appreciated!
marlin 60 is the most perfect 22 and perfect for young shooters. Far more accurate than my 10/22

Where are you guys seeing the 10/22 accuracy start to fall apart. It seems to be around the 160-70 yard mark. While bolt guns seem to hold it together longer

Wouldn't this be slightly ammo dependent? My only Ruger factory rifle is a Race Rifle, 2007 model, it has shot some fantastic groups at 250 yards with CCI SV, then the next day, may struggle with a NRL 22 rack at 35 yards. SV and wind are not that compatible.
I am not about to pay more for ammo for the rifle.

From what I seen, is that a well accurrized custom 10/22 tend to shoot 4-6 inch groups at 200 yards with premium eley, SK, and Lapua ammo. While bolt guns can do half that or more at the same distance

I shoot long range steel matches. My supergrade does well as my bolt guns out to 285 yds. Beyond that I see more vertical than the bolt. But my bolt guns have EC V2 tuners, tuned for long range. all shooting SKLR. Maybe Need a tuner on my Kidd SG.

I think you'll be way better off than buying a factory 10/22. I built mine with Kidd Parts, Kidd 20" Bull Barrel, and a BX Trigger in a Faxon Receiver (100% do NOT recommend the Faxon receiver). I haven't done any long range shooting with it, but I'm very happy with the performance and feel of it. Can definitely shoot sub MOA at 50 yards and manages around MOA with a lot of different ammo types.

Most recent ammo test with Norma Match, but it's done well with several types I've tried. I've also still been playing with action screw torque. Also, there is plenty of user error in some of the groups.

Scrub the chamber of the barrel - probably a carbon ring causing the issues.

Take a look at Gunsmither Tools brand Brush n' Mop chamber tool. They have a video posted as well.
Lead ring. But you are correct, sir. Continued firing can produce an out of battery case blowout. If Tony put his Eley chamber in here, mandatory scrubbing the lead/chamber every 200 rounds.

Easy button: pick up a junker cheap. Send it to Randy at CPC. Will shoot 185-190 on the ABRA target and 0.2-0.25” at 50 with selected ammo

My precision drops off dramatically once the bullets leave the barrel. But still fun. Hit three in a row, two times last week on the 10” gong. But averaging about three out of ten at best. 365 yards across the hollow is challenging, right at 20 mils.

It will hold minute of milk jug spout laid sideways at 50, all day everyday.

Green Mountain barrel, Victor Company stock and cheek riser, BX trigger, and Volquartsen bolt.

On the underside I mounted up a rail modified from a cheap MLOK rail and low pro Arca rail.

I just found this thread. I had a stock 10/22 as a kid that I ran around smoking squirrels with for years. In my ignorant mind, it was laser accurate.

I bought a 10/22 takedown a few years back, and admittedly, I've only put bulk ammo in it and given it zero improvements, but it shoots somewhere between 3 and 4 moa. It is embarrassing. 😂

I don't even know where it is anymore, maybe in a closet somewhere. I bought a bergara b14r, (the one with the 700 footprint), and it shoots .5moa or better with sk pistol, so I'll probably give the 10/22 away as a present to one of my nephews if I ever find it again.
