How dangerous for a Marine in Korea now?

Re: How dangerous for a Marine in Korea now?

The chance of getting shot at goes with the job. People who don't want to take that risk shouldn't be in the Marines. Dad should suck it up, and realize that his son is well trained to kill people and break things.

Not much chance of going 100% hot at all.

When he signed up he wrote a open ended check, up to and including his life to the people of the United States. I pray it doesn't come to that, but folks, including parents, need to understand what goes with any job were you are working on behalf of the United States of America, on or, off shore.

I made sure my son fully understood that fact, before he held his hand up almost 15 years ago now.

Nice. I'll tell him how supportive you were.

FYI, both son and father knew the risks and accepted them. Still do. Neither father nor son are regretting the decision to serve. Dad's concern is just that which is natural to a father, and in light of the day's developments in Korea he's wondering if combat is likely.

Dad's get to be nervous. It has no bearing on his understanding that his kid has a dangerous job. Nothing in this post points toward the Dad not supporting his son's decision to join. A little context goes a long way.

There is always something goofy going on over there. I was there 96-97 and couldn't believe the stuff that never made the news here. Until the North Korean sub ran aground and we had NK SF running around the mountains in women's clothing shooting ROK troops.

At the same time, nothing really ever happened to US troops from combat type situations. Most issues were from alcohol.

No shit? May 96 - May 97 Camp Page and I would back fill Camp Long, Eagle, and CRC.

Re: How dangerous for a Marine in Korea now?

The leadership of North Korea is nuts. "Nuts" is a technical term which through professional training I'm qualified to use.

The trouble with dealing with nuts - which I have some personal experience of this year in my own family - is that they do stuff which makes no rational sense, and which no intelligence agency is able to predict very well.

One could look at it this way - those going to Afghanistan have a pretty good chance of getting shot at. Those going to Korea have a pretty good chance of not getting shot at.

And there's another upside - the Marine in question will have a chance to sample authentic kimchee.

Used to work with a bunch of Korean women who were all right off the boat and got to try authentic kimchee. I think I'd rather have someone shooting at me.

Re: How dangerous for a Marine in Korea now?

I was there from Mar 91 to Mar 92. I had just turned 18 and it was a very uneasy year for me. I was at Camp Hovey which was something like 13 miles (as the crow flies) from the DMZ, not all that close but close enough for me. We had regular alerts which always made me nervous but the fighter jets which came screaming over our valley, headed north, at top speed used to scare the hell out of me. We were told that the 2nd I.D. was the most powerful division in the world (at the time) but we would be nothing but a speedbump should NK decide they wanted to take Seoul. Hated every second of what I can remember of that year. Pretty sure I ruined my liver while I was there. Buying extra rations of alcohol was damned expensive.

I honestly believe that 90% of NK soldiers would defect as soon as they got south of the DMZ. The lives of those in NK is miserable and most could be swayed into dissent with a pack of hot dogs and a bottle of Soju.

Re: How dangerous for a Marine in Korea now?

yeah Camp Page was nothing but an airstrip really. We had an 8 minute life expectancy. Playing volleyball on a Saturday while A-10's practiced dive bombing you to destroy the runway was common. Pretty trippy when you're new.

History lesson,... when present shit head in charge, took over from his retarded father in the 90's, same thing happened back then. Little dipshit will take over very soon,....these folks have not thought out of the box from the early 60's on.

Every time I hear about what the north might do, I recall their active defences in early to mid 65 and how easy it was for us to split port at Nampo an take the water route back to the Spoon-bill. They never even knew we were there until 24 hrs after we were gone,...

A group of 5th week cruts could/would have done better. I and others still have the itch for payback, over those speakers and the shit talking they would always do,... after we back door'ed their ass's. ROFLMFAO

Re: How dangerous for a Marine in Korea now?

I remember our MK-19 range was right on the DMZ and we would dig in at night during field exercises. Once everything settled and was quiet you could hear the loud speakers at Freedom Village beckoning to us. lol, Promising free ramyen for life as an NK Officer if we would defect to the North.

That was the same night we convinced this dipshit in our unit that the mortar exercises across the valley were actually exploding gophers indigenousness to Korea.

Re: How dangerous for a Marine in Korea now?

There is an ongoing power struggle within the North Korean leadership over succession. This is almost certainly related to that. Main thing to note is China's isn't happy with the strike and that puts a lid on this escalating.
