Gunsmithing How do I remove safe dings from a lamainate stock?

Hello all,

I got to looking at my 597 22 mag laminate- it looks like shit from me dragging it in and out of the safe. Is there a quick, easy way to touch up laminate stocks?

Fold a cloth a few times, soak it in water and place it over the dent. Then heat your clothes iron on high and iron the cloth over the dent in the stock. Repeat this until it has raised the wood as much as it will. Some dents come right up, others do not.

Rub some Tung or Linseed oil on the stock when you are finished to blend it back together.

+1 That's what we all did in the factories when desk tops didn't look perdy.

Another thing to try with the wet cloth is to use a really large soldering iron. It gets plenty hot and easier to maneuver. Do this at your own risk!

steaming the dents will definately work. The caution I would place out there is that if you have a lacquer or varnish on there, it may discolor. I tried this trick on a 725 stock, and ended up having to blend in some lacquer due to the spot turning white from the moisture. The dent came out slicker than anything though. Most laminate stocks I have seen have a lacquer style finish on them, not an oil one.
