I just picked up a 6 CM GAP10. I was using Hornady's OAL gauge in my .243 because they had the modified shell for it.

So how do you measure OAL ina semi auto with a round that you cant use on the gauge?

They have a 6.5 Creedmoor modified case.

Could I just run that through a 6 CM sizing die?

Look up drill sizes (inch, number, letter, metric) for the right diameter and use the shank for an expander. Helps to grind a taper on the end & use lube. You might have to try a couple before you find the right one. Or maybe a K&M neck turning expander pin.

Take a sized 6CM cut a slit in the neck, stick projectile of choice barely into neck, set it in the chamber, close bolt, gently but all the way. Remove carefully and measure.

Doesnt the bullet normally get stuck in the lands on the way out?

Also, how do you do it on a gas gun, put the round onto the bolt face with the lip under the extractor and feed it in slowly?

Split the neck as advised above. Drill out the primer pocket to accept a cleaning rod. Seat bullet deep and chamber it with bolt removed. From the rear, push the bullet forward with the rod till it hits the lands.

If you do it the other way (seated long and closed with the bolt), smoke the bullet so you’ll be able to see if the lands grabbed it and pulled it out some.

+1 I don't split the neck just use a once fired case has always worked for me. Or send a fired case to Hornady and they will turn it into a case gauge for you.

As for gas guns either slowly bring the bolt forward while holding the charge handle. Or split your upper and push the BCG with your hand.

Yep, great info. I had called Hornady to ask them and came back to this post to advise everyone that might be interested.

If you send Hornady 2 once fired, unsized cases and a check or money order for $15, they will send you back a threaded and modified case to fit your Lock N Load OAL gauge.

They will do this for ANY rifle caliber, even wildcat cartridges.

Re: How do you measure OAL without an OAL gauge?

One option that can work well is to close your bolt then insert a cleaning rod until it touches the face of your bolt mark the rod at the muzzle then remove your upper and bolt guide the bullet you want to use into the chamber and gently hold it in place using a smal stick or tool then slide the cleaning rod down your barrle again (make sure you have something on it to prevent it from missing the bullet I used a plastic jag that came free with a cleaning kit and just cut off the sharp point. Once the rod contacts the top of the bullet you mark it again if you measure the distance from the first mark to the second you know your OAL from tip of bullet to bolt face.
