Range Report How long do you expect accuracy to remain

Re: How long do you expect accuracy to remain

Hard to say. Depending on the barrel itself. I have shot over two hundred rounds in my AIAW without cleaning it. Accuracy is still more than acceptable.

Re: How long do you expect accuracy to remain

If this were a benchrest gun shootin in the zeros (0.0xx) for 5 shot groups, you might get 6-8 shots before groups began to open up visibly and statisctically.

If this were a simple hunting gun shooting top-line hunting ammo and shoots 1.2" 5-shot groups, you could probably go thousands of rounds befor you could measure the fouling hurting the accuracy.

So, more data is needed to answer your question.

Re: How long do you expect accuracy to remain

I have gone just over 800 rounds in one of my .308 customs with a Bartlein barrel before I cleaned it. I only cleaned it because it got wet, accuracy was still .5 or better.

Every barrel is different as well as shooting technique, no two barrels are the same.

Totally true. If the gun keeps shooting well, don't clean it.

Randy, BTW:

Tim is really excited about recieving his build this coming week. He is an awesome shooter and will do your best efforts justice. He shot my .308 ROCK the other day out in the desert and his first round was for wind at 1K, then a sub 4" 4 rounds on steel. </div></div>
I witnessed that. HOLY SHIT, I would have been happy with that group at 500 yds.

Re: How long do you expect accuracy to remain

I actually notice accuracy getting better with 50 rounds or so down the barrel with no cleaning... I was dissapointed I had to clean my barrel (got it wet out shooting) the weekend before an F-class match. I've read simular experiences at 6mmbr.com

Re: How long do you expect accuracy to remain

Rifleman magazine just had an article on this same subject and they tested a rifle out to 300 rds with no detriment to accuracy. At that point I believe they cleaned it on principle but it was interesting to hear. Of course they even went further to say that the break in procedure is pretty much nonsense as well. I have not tested that one out so....

Re: How long do you expect accuracy to remain

My SSG likes a dirty bore. Clean bore she will open up to 1moa after about 50 rounds to fowl her she makes her way back to .5 moa. I only clean her ever 400-500 rounds. Sako308, after Kurts match were going to do some 1k and beyond shooting you should join us Sunday.

Re: How long do you expect accuracy to remain

I run my factory CM Remington barrel to 500 before cleaning. Somewhere between 500 and 600 I will clean it. After 600 it starts to open up to where I can't count on sub-MOA performance.

Again, that's a factory hammer forged Remington barrel with 2700 rounds through it.

It definitely likes to be dirty. I hits optimal accuracy with at least 50 rounds through it.

I found my SPS-T to be almost the same thing. After about 25-50 rounds, it really starts shooting. I've been going about 150-200 rounds before cleaning, for no particular reason other than it feels right. But I'm going to see where the drop off point is now.....
