how many rounds at the range do you fire

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

I guess it depends on the distance your shooting. 200 is a lot for 308 if it's a bolt gun. I might put 80-100 downrange at the most when I go but I usually shoot between 500-1000yds.

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

I usually do 40 to 60 when I'm running my 308 bolt gun, or about 10 if I'm doing a 338 or above.

When using a .223 AR, then easily 200+

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

All of them.

J/k. I usually load up 75-100 .308 if I'm doing long range steel or drills with the bolt gun. If it's the carbine, maybe 200-300 in a day

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

What ever I have reloaded or have left to shoot off. Normally anywhere from 20-50 rounds of 308 bolt.

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

I usually take out a few different types of guns each time I go out. Usually about 100 in my bolt action .308. About 75 each in semi auto handguns. About 25-30 in with the .454 Casull. Now you can get out of hand with the AR's, but if you use a 10rnd mag that slows you down, tough to say how much I usually use.

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

Take plenty sometimes i will shoot 30 and sometime 50 depending on where i go shoot.I have my bolt gun ammo in 50 rd boxes and usually take 2 of them.

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

It all depends on how often you get to shoot. There are times I shoot three or four days a week. In that case, I may only fire 20 rounds at 1k, per afternoon/morning. If it were only once a week, at 1k, I'd fire at least 40. I guess it all depends on wheter you are paying for the ammo. I'm inclined to fire more if it is free.

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

Bolt gun: Average 50 per gun, rarely more, often less.
House gun: a few hundred.

A more interesting question might be: how long do you shoot? I was at the range 4 hours yesterday and shot a total of about 140 rounds, 2 bolt guns and slow fire from an accurized Garand. It's about trigger time, yes, but more than that it's about obsessing over the round in the chamber. I'm just getting back into rifle after a long absence (children etc), and am on the steep part of the re-learning curve. I constantly catch myself making errors, correct them, and start the sequence over.

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

Not enough, and it shows. These days, I am lucky to be able to get away from the house twice each month to fire in our local FV200 unofficial match/practices.

Some months that's all there is. Most matches I'll make up and fire all of my 60 rounds. I don't like having a handful of unused handloads around.

When I do get to practice, it's with .22LR, and the volume varies quite a bit, depending on conditions and how the targets are looking. If things go well, I'm likely to pack up and go home sooner.

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

Thanks for all the responses. Like I said I try for 200 rds in 308 since I can only get to the range once every week or other week. I usually come home with 2 to 3 fifty round ammo boxes still unfired. I always tell myself dammit im doing 200 rounds today but time only lets me do so many. Like SWRichmond said I guess more in how long you shoot than how many. For me its usually a couple hours and the wife and kids notice a differance when i get back.

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

With the precision rifles on a "range" day I can go 50-100.

If I am out doing "long range", it may be as few as 20 because I am waiting for conditions to change or taking very careful note of what's going on.

AR, shotgun and pistol I have no idea. They give me ammo, tell me what to shoot and we pickup the brass when done. It could be 90-200 for the M4 depending on the training goals.

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

Ive been wondering this as well. Ill be getting a .308 rifle soon and one thing that attracts me to it is the fact that although the ammunition is more expensive than .223, I dont think I will shoot as much of it on my trips to the range.

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

I only get to normally shoot on the weekends due to my work schedule, and I normally shoot between 30 and 50 rounds from my .308 Bolt. Just enough to confirm zero, and then to work on breathing and trigger squeeze.

Been sort of a slow year, this year....

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

I only use my match rifle for matches, load development, or load confirmation. Sometimes, I will actually even use the match as a load development fine tuning session. Nothing duplicates match conditions for testing quite as well as an actual match. I will be doing late-stage load refinement testing for my 2011 .222 Rem/50gr NosBT comp load as part of my shooting in the next Odessa FV200 match.

Bore life is something my finances force me to treat as a very valuable commodity. That's why I do all other shooting with a .22LR. For example, my .260 Match rifle has an aftermarket barrel that is about five or six years old, and still has only about 1500rd through it. I keep track by holding onto the empty bullet package labels.

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

If I'm working up a load I usually just shoot four three shot groups and then come back home to do a little studying up on what happend then I'll reload em again and do it all over when i get a chance to go back. After I've found my load I will usually shoot around 20 each trip at various distances.

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

My load/ladder testing involves at least ten rounds of each increment fired on a single aimpoint. I will generally do initial tests for 4-5 increments, each increment on its own aimpoint, fired in a round robin sequence (i.e. a sequence of one round from each incrment to its own aimpoint, then another sequence, until all rounds are expended. Match conditions (time limits, firing cadence, shooting position, and so on) are followed as closely as possible. Increments are approximately 1% of overall charge weight.

Load refinement testing brackets the likeliest load by .1gr increments, typically 10 rounds of the selected increment and .1gr above and below, again fired in round robin sequence. Usually I will move out from 100yd to 200yd for this test firing sequence.

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

I think the right answer is "It Depends"

If im going to the range to shoot with afew guns I prob dont shoot more than 100rds per caliber. some more some less depends on what im there to do. If im going to the range to practice I always go knowing what im going to do and hope to achieve by the end of the session i.e sight in/zero, test ammo or position.

either way I go to with the end in mind. go with the guys to shot and kill time then it all depends on what is plentiful that week.
not being rich to burn ammo or with lots of free time keeps me focused per session. make em count!

Re: how many rounds at the range do you fire

Not much at all. At a range session of abuot 5-6 hours, I shoot about 100 rounds. Sometimes it takes a while for them to finish the ceasefire check.
