just getting into the bolt gun scene and doing my own reloading. I just wanted to poll everyone as to how many rounds they have per firearm I have about 350 or so brass for my 308 I was just wondering when a good time to stop buying componets for it

A practical man prepares for the future zombie attack. The answer to your question is when you run out of money.

Re: how many rounds do you have per firearm

Yeah good answer I have that covered on the surplus .223 ammo the hornady lock and load has helped that out but just curious on your long range zombie loads.

Re: how many rounds do you have per firearm

For one rifle I have "in stock" 500 twice fired for fireforming and then annealed, so basically virgin, Lapua brass for my 243AI, loaded with 85 grain TSX's......

Some would call that fucking insane, others would call it not enough....pick your own poison.

Quit buyimg componets(Brass,Bullets,Powder and Primers) when you have what it takes so that you'll never run out

Re: how many rounds do you have per firearm

I am of the opinion that the tide of politics is turning against gun owners, so since 2008, I have been selling off my guns, and shooting up my ammo. I have a single shot 12 ga, and one revolver left, with 5 rounds for the 12, and 12 for the revolver.
I would never tell on a public forum what I have in stock. The enemy is here, too.

Yep, and just being here is enough to get you "on the list".

Numbers and details don't mean shit.......

Re: how many rounds do you have per firearm

The Police over here tell us exactly how much we are allowed to keep and purchase per calibre, fortunately they exercise a fair degree of common sense.

Re: how many rounds do you have per firearm

A Military basic load for each will be enough. There will be plenty of it on the body's of, or in the rides of, those who think they know how to survive.
Real life is not like a video game, internet lore, or a one way.

There's a word for that.....oxymoron, I believe.

As in cruel kindness <pun there, likely>.

Re: how many rounds do you have per firearm

Depends on how often and how much you like reloading. I think some where between 50 and 5000 should do it.

Re: how many rounds do you have per firearm

Well I guess I wasn't asking anyone to disclose their stashes online just wondering for a long range rifle that you reload precision rounds for, how many you keep in rotation. I'm thinking 500 rounds of accurate loads then maybe a stash of 147gr ball that you only need to be Minute of Zombie. Thanks for the replies

Re: how many rounds do you have per firearm

I don't make a habit of listing how many components and ammo I keep, not gonna start tonight either. It is really hard to ask everyone how much they keep for each gun without asking them to disclose their personal stash.
I can tell you how to figure to a tee how much to keep. How much ammo can you swim the nearest river with? That is how much you need.

Re: how many rounds do you have per firearm

I have a 300WM and 50 cases seems to be more than enough in a hunting application. But, I have another 50 prepped and ready, when the time comes. In fact, every rifle I own is for hunting something, and one doesn't need massive amounts of ammo, especially since a good number of those rifles require fireforming. I'm comfortable with between 100 and 400 cases per rifle. Now, bullets, primers and powder is another matter, I might stockpile those items. But, if a man takes care of his brass and loads it judiciously, 200 cases will last a very long time, sufficient for the life of the barrel, I think? BB

Re: how many rounds do you have per firearm

The only time you can have too much ammo is when your house catches on fire.

Regardless of how much ammo/components I may have put back from time to time, the amount I keep in cycle for everyday shooting depends on what kind of shooting I'm doing.

There was a time when I shot competitively and I had a huge inventory of components dedicated to that purpose. Due to health issues I don't do that anymore. Just for going out on weekends and shooting paper or steel, a few hundred pieces of brass is enough. That doesn't mean I can't have more put back for other possibilities.

Re: how many rounds do you have per firearm

I maintain three kinds of stocks.

The first is for ongoing use. I try to keep this as close to a practical limit as possible. For match shooting, I figure I should be putting about 100/120 cases for chambering/rifle through a full life cycle (prep-new thru done-recycle) each year, and I only load enough for the very next outing/match (usually 50 or 60).

I don't like to keep loaded rounds on-hand for much more than 2 weeks before use, I often see evidence of neck bonding on significantly older cartridges (hard pull forse requirement combined with brass 'stains' on seated bullets where neck-bullet contact has been established).

I don't usually pull down old loads, but there are a some occasions that call for it, and I don't like the long-term trends I see. This could even be a supporting justification of the older USGI pracitce of using bitumen to seal bullets.

The second type of stocking is to maintain a ready reserve of fresh components as a hedge against any number of possibilities ranging from economics to isurrection. There is no ideal number for this sort of thing, and no single reason to support it.

The third type of stocking is the fun/Zobie/insurrection stocking of non-reloadable ammo. Nothing sinister here, I just don't believe in handloading in bulk for plinker-like applications. I think a guy would be a lot better off plinking through a stock of steelcase/Berdan 7.62x39 or 5.56 stuff than to try and handload for that kind of shooting. The alternative is simply flat out crazy.

I used to handlaod because that was the only way I could afford to shoot (and plinking was not on the menu very much). These days, I still handload for accuracy; but now I can afford to plink, and I can afford a moderately ample stock of steelcase plinker rounds. But nothing doomsday prepper-like. That's also simply flat out crazy.

Re: how many rounds do you have per firearm

<shrug> I lost interest in plinking shit, decades ago. But, I understand the rationale and the need for a bunch of factory stuff. Most everything I own has never seen a factory cartridge. Full disclosure: except 45ACP and 25ACP. BB
