Personally i shoot about 6-8.000 rounds of 22lr indoor during the winter moths on electronic targets.
I also shoot 3-4000 rounds of .308 and 6,5x55 in the summer months.
75% at 200m, also on electronic targets.
25% at 100-1000m hunting and at the range.

I try to make every shot a perfect shot, and not shoot the most possible amount of ammo. but it still adds up to a lot...
How much do you guys train with your precision rifle?

Re: How much do you guys train?

Why? Are you going to shoot more because somebody else shoots more than you? Or shoot less because others shoot less than you? I'd recommend just shooting enough to keep your skills to an acceptable level

Re: How much do you guys train?

So admittedly, I don't know shit from shinola about what it takes to get good at this discipline. Relative to the OP, I can answer not nearly enough. That said, I'm trying and getting a sense for how much others train would be immensely helpful in gauging my own efforts.

Certainly not looking for an argument, but it seems like a perfectly reasonable ask on this end.

Re: How much do you guys train?

I would think it is a perfectly acceptable question. Lowlight is the only one on here that is judge and jury. If someone has a problem with anyone's questions or comments see him or a mod.

Re: How much do you guys train?

Although I don't think there's anything wrong in asking this question, it is probably a lot more informative to know how the rounds are being used, rather than just the total number.

Re: How much do you guys train?

Its pretty funny to see that someone actually gets angry because someone else asks a simple question.

Living in a city with 25.000 inhabitants, there is only 3-5 persons training on a regular basis.

There is probably also around 500 people that fire the yearly 30rds to be able to hunt with a rifle.

just trying to get a feel if this is the norm...

Of course there is more interesting to learn how people spend there rounds, but there is a lot of treads and tips on training metods here, just curios on the round count;)

Re: How much do you guys train?

I think a large majority of gun owners in the USA shoot very little. Training is a whole other question. Very few train in the USA other than military or LE. If you come over and shoot a season of DCM, you will be surprised how few show up to compete. This forum does have some great members who compete. Sometimes they chime in with words of wisdom.

Re: How much do you guys train?

Those of us who actually "train" are the minority of gun owners in the US.

Personally I can't tell you how many rounds I shoot a month. I try to hit the range a couple times a week. If I do or not depends on other projects I am working on and my work schedule. When I get low on bullets and powder, I order more.

I would guess that I shoot at least 400-500 rounds a month. I am not so much concerned with how many rounds I shoot as I am about accomplishing the goals I set out for that training session.

I need to get the .22 out more often, but I really prefer to shoot the .308.

Re: How much do you guys train?

In forantly I'm at the 100-500 actualy with my tactal 50-100 but I 22lr the hell out of it when I have the Chanch I'm wanting to get a ruger 10/22 and a barrell it and stock it real good you know lighting up the bolt all the essential stuff then I'll really shoot it up I wish I could find a stock for my future ruger as I have no a b&c m40 or a acis stock of you guys know anything hit me up

Re: How much do you guys train?

A more interesting question would be how many rounds do you expend per training session and why; or, put another way, what is the practical limit of your concentration per session in number of rounds fired.

Re: How much do you guys train?

Less than 50 a month.
Mainly because there's no ranges to shoot at in Victoria.
Wish i could get more in, but money and time are the main factors.

~~~~~
Also, it's a good question. To the OP, some people here get off on having a go at others, i'm actually interested in the answer too.
Re: How much do you guys train?
Between team practice session and matches I shoot every weekend or just about. Practice session usually run from 22-50+ rounds, we average 2 matches a month and they are generally about 50-60 rounds. On some occasions more and the round count is higher during 2 day matches.
I'm shooting about 250-300 rounds a month right now. My rock barrel will be toast my summer.
Re: How much do you guys train?
I wish I could shoot more but I just can't afford to spend more than $75-$100 a month on ammo, and I split that between the rifle, the shotgun, and the pistol. Maybe once I get a real job...
Re: How much do you guys train?
maybe that ought to be related to the costs? i try to spend about one box (20rounds) per month on the 200m range. considering that that's federal accubond and one box costs 70euro (about 90 usd per box or about 4 usd/rnd) - that's about as much as i can spend without too much pain in the neck.
^THIS
I'm not angry, just trying to point out how retarded the premise is. Squeezing off rounds of a specific quantity doesn't make you a better shooter. I can go put 1000 rounds down my 10/22 in a day rapid fire, but that doesn't mean I'm becoming a better rifleman because of it.
It's called "reading comprehension".
I didn't see anything about "how many rounds do you spray at one sitting?"
It should be glaringly apparent that if you go bump-fire 1000 rounds a week you will still suck at actually firing single aimed shots. However what is also not accounted for in your "round count" estimation is how many HOURS are spent each week dry-firing.
When I am attempting to fix an issue, hone a skill or I just can't get to the range as often as I wanted to, I spend more time on the carpet in my living room. I have a target taped to the bottom corner of my fridge that has hundreds of thousands of imaginary shots through it. When I am prepping for a big match, I may spend a couple hours a day dry-firing at that target from prone, sitting, standing, etc. I even have a mini-barricade I setup. There is really no limit to the creativity. It is all effective training.
Obviously you need to live-fire for wind doping and recoil control, but you can spend a minimum of ammo for a maximum result.
Re: How much do you guys train?
I dry fire 4 nights a week, usually comes out to about 500 dry fires over 3 hours.
I get to the range once a week with 120 rounds. The range I go to only gets out to 500 yards. I try and make sure I am not just shooting groups so here is my general regimen:
- cold bore 2 shoots @ 500 yard.
- 5 shot group @ 100 yards, got to have at least one group
wink.gif
.
- 20 shots Snipers Hide Dot Drill strong side @ 100 yards. I give myself 3 minutes to do this drill.
- 20 shots Snipers Hide Dot Drill weak side @ 100 yards. Slow and easy on this one.
- 4x kneeling 5 shots @ 3" target @ 100 yards.
- My own version of chaos, zero at 400 and load 8 rounds. Then shoot at 400, 200, 500, then 400. I get only two shots per target. I score it one point for each hit and 1 point for every bullet left over. I usually do this twice.
- Swingers at 300. There are 3 of them, each only 4" square. I load up 3 rounds. In 12 seconds I have to hit each one. This one is really tough for me for some reason. I frequently get the first two and blow the last one.
- Swingers at 500. I do the same drill as at 300, the plates are 8", 5", and 2.5". I rarely get the last one here too.
If I have more ammo left over I will pretty much do whatever I want, shoot groups, steel, or what not. Usually takes me 3 hours to do it all.
Re: How much do you guys train?
I fire less than 50 rds. I shoot every week. I setup and fire a shot. If it was not great I fire a second. I then move to a different location and do the same. This last summer everything has been flooded or the grass is four plus feet high so the 1,000yd range has been the only place I can shoot. Usually it is fire one shot and it is good enough to get a kill on a deer so it is pack up and do other stuff.
Since you're either being a smart-ass, let me explain to you I was using an extreme example to demonstrate a point. Its an example and is still applicable. A guy could shoot 100 5 round groups at 100 yards every week with his "precision rifle" and it doesn't mean squat when it comes to long-range shooting. There isn't a magic quantitative amount of trigger-yanking that makes you a better shooter. Its the quality of training that is important.
Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.
Re: How much do you guys train?
One thing nice about living in sd is oportunity. Bored go shoot pds,yotes or get the freinds together and set up steel for as far as we want. Life is the major factor married and kids sure tightens up the schedule.
Re: How much do you guys train?
I voted "I don't shoot" just for shits and giggles. I really don't know how much I shoot or train. I have been shooting for almost 36 years now and reloading for nearly 30yrs and I couldn't begin to tell you how much lead and copper I have sent down range or placed through the vitals of animals from squirrel to whitetail. Enough to squat a full size F150 would be a reasonable guess. Add shotgun into that and it is truly impressive. There was a time I hunted something 4-5 days a week, every time I had an hour to get in the woods or in the field. The last 15+ years it has been mostly competition ranging from 1000yd BR, SB silhouette, CLA Silhouette, High Power, IHMSA and recently 22 Tactical. I shoot a lot but WHEN I shoot it is productive and methodical. I still stay boned up on skeet and shooting a hunting rifle but anymore all that is like riding a bicycle.
Re: How much do you guys train?
i shoot both fullbore and smallbore
fullbore once a fortnight (.308 work)
smallbore once a week maybe twice (.22 work)
so 50-100 rounds in smallbore a week
and approx 24 a fortnight in fullbore
thats just at the range and is all training and learning how to read flags
My philosophy of it all is i have a goal and that goal is to put a perfect shot on my target and not be able to tell past the second shot how many went through that hole.
Re: How much do you guys train?
You question is inherently flawed.
Round count has NOTHING to do with true TRAINING.
The only thing worse than not training is repeating the wrong things, particularly with center fire. It just makes it that much harder to unlearn the wrong way and relearn the right way.
Center fire live fire is one of the least effective training methods on the planet.
Re: How much do you guys train?
Cracka is right, you can train all day, if u do it wrong, it does not matter. I think this survey would be more informative with people said how much they train followed by 1 or 2 of their best dot drill targets. Then u can see who is doing it right.
Re: How much do you guys train?
So what are we training for?
smile.gif
If you're training, you're also spending time in the gym, on the treadmill, the dojo, bushcrafting, living off the land, etc.
Now compete, target shoot, plink, hunt.....now we're talkin to the masses.........
