The tq spec is 20in/lbs...but my tq wrench won't be here till the 12th, so i'm just going by hand, for now, and was curious if you can just go for a certain ring gap to tide me over until i have the right tool, as I have to go shoot tomorrow.

Some rings have gap, others don't. You can't use that to judge.
Use one of the small L shaped allen or torx wrenches, only hold it by the small end of the L, tighten down using that end and you'll be about 15-20 in/lb. Don't use the 3 inch long end of the L to hang onto or you'll be able to tighten too much.

That depends on the rings. Best thing is to make sure each one is snug. About a 1/4 turn after you feel some resistance from the screw.
nThat's assuming the scope rings are aligned. Otherwise, there won't be much contact with the rings anyway and the scope will slip under that much torque. The amount of torque needed to keep the scope secured could also impact the tube.
Edit: Small lesson in physics: torque is just a moment about a center. 20 in lbs would be the same thing as tying 10 lbs to a wrench 2" from the screw (and letting gravity be the only force acting on the screw).

these do have a gap, so I wasn't sure it anyone had looked at a gap/tq correlation

A torque spec would be how much static force (friction) is being exerted on the screw by the scope onto the rings. So, there's no real way to quantify how much gap is how much torque.

I don't think I have ever used a torque wrench on any of my rings and they all seem to shoot fine and don't leave ring marks either. Just don't superman them and you'll be fine. Just tighten them down evenly is what I have noticed being important more than the actually torque wrench setting.

I've heard the "use the short end of the allen wrench" several times and that's what I usually do. I've never had a torque wrench though so I have no idea what they are actually torqued to but I've never had one slip and don't remember any that have caused ring marks.

i did it that way...after i unloosened them from doing the gap thing...and, well..shit...i had em way too tight! I'll have my tq wrench on the 12th and after i check the calibration (well..i'll have my metrologist do it lol) I'll check the tq on the screws...and then do them to 20in/lbs
