Like the title says... I'm trying to figure out the rifling on my "new to me" rifle.

I've done a site search here, searched remington's site and followed several google links to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated.

The rifle is in this SH thread .

Thanks!

Thanks!

I'm trying to get the data for the rifle and ammunition entered into the app "Shooter" that I've seen a lot of people talk about using and this was buggering me up!

To confirm that if it interests you use your cleaning rod and a firm patch/jag. Shove it in a little past the chamber, Use a sharpie and mark top dead center near the handle. Mark too a reference on the rod even with a point on the reciever that's easy to see, like an edge of the bolt cut out. Push the rod in until you can witness one full turn on the mark that you put near the handle. Stop, mark the rod again at the same reference point on the reciever. Withdraw the rod, and using a ruler or a tape, measure the distance between the two marks that you referenced off of the reciever.

That's your twist, exactly.......

I know 12 is the standard for 26" varmint ADLs (inexpensive SPS-V with no hinged floorplate), but since it's a 24", I am guessing it may be a standard contour and 10 twist, an inexpensive version of the SPS basically. You may want to search how to check it yourself (something like pushing a rod through and counting the revolutions). That's what I'd do if it really matters to you, since even if they publish 10 or 12, it may be 1/2 off either way!

ETA: trip beat me to it...with better instructions!

Thanks for the tips guys, not sure I've ever cleaned any of my rifles quite that deliberately before.

Quick question, since both of you kind of alluded to a "if it really matters" scenario......

Does it really matter what the twist rate is if I plan to hand load? I thought from doing some reading in the ballistics section that it would be helpful to know before going out and buying a few of everything for load development. Would "try everything" be a better method than trying to "home in on a sweet spot" right off the bat?

FYI this will be my first run at reloading and I don't even have the gear yet but I've got a couple of fellas who have offered to let me use their gear, show me "how it's done" and help me develop some loads for my new rifle.

I figure I'll start collecting the gear to reload probably part by part on the various firearms classifieds I visit, maybe I'll get lucky @ an auction or something, it's not something I'm fast tracking financially.

No, I was alluding to you maybe wanting to be absolutely sure what you have and not relying on what some internet forum tells you it probably might be....

Damn right it matters. If you want to do anything serious with long range reloading then knowing twist rate is akin to knowing bore diameter and chambering...and a bunch of other need-to-knows.

On aside I just had a 9.5" twist cut in a premium .30 cal tube. I trust the guy that ordered it and put it together, I trust the company that made the barrel....but you can bet I'll satisfy my inner need to know for sure by measuring it for myself.
