Gunsmithing How to make DBM for Tikka T3 Lite??

Re: How to make DBM for Tikka T3 Lite??

You could get a CDI Precision DBM for the Tikka, and run some of the AICS mags. I think it's nearly a frop-in fir for the Tikka factory bottom metal.

Re: How to make DBM for Tikka T3 Lite??

Yea, I have heard about CDI, but its pretty costly. I can have easy access to old aluminum ar-15 mags, so if they could be made to work then i dont have to buy any more mags.

Im wondering if its a possible do it yourself job.

Re: How to make DBM for Tikka T3 Lite??

First of all, the T3 poly mag is not cheap. Have you seen what they are getting for them?
I have the CDI installed in my T3 Tactical and am very happy with the fit, finish and customer service I got from Jeff at CDI. It is $209, IIRC, without a mag. Installation costs another $125 or so. I would think if you're handy enough to think you can build a DBM that uses AR mags for your rifle that you could easily install the CDI yourself and save that money.
BTW, if you take a metal AR mag and a poly mag, place them on your driveway and then drive over them with your truck I think you might be surprised which one survives.

Sorry about using cheap. I suppose that wasnt the best word choice. I do know how much they are asking. about $50 some places. but you can get aluminum ar mags for like 15 bucks some places.

I would be able to install the bottom metal if i bought it from CDI, but i dont want to pay the $209 plus mags. I think it would be cheaper to modify the magwell somehow on my own.

Re: How to make DBM for Tikka T3 Lite??

You can't use AR mags in a T3 (or Rem 700) without milling open the magazine well. AR mags are wide at the feedlips. Further, the AR feeds from a true staggered feed mag. This means that the case does not protrude above the feedlips at all. In an AR, this is no problem, the bolt lug reaches down into the mag and grabs the round. The bolt carrier has cutouts to clear the feedlips. These cutouts are not possible on a T3 because the bolt body must rotate as you close the bolt. Basically you have to rely on whatever part of the T3 bolt can squeeze between the AR mag feedlips to grab the round. You won't get very much contact but it might be enough for non-professional shooting.

Allegedly with Mini-14 mags you don't have to modify the magwell on a 700 because the mag body and feedlips are narrower and will fit. And apparently the above company has had some success with their mag kit, although if I remember correctly, it was several years ago that they were trying to bring this to market.

Alutek.eu are manufacturing the best well made bottommetals for T3 that I have seen, both for orignal mags and for AICS mags.
Just got their boltshrod for T3 and that is great.

That would be correct. They hold 10 rounds and feed anything I have tried thru them.
