How to search SnipersHide effectively...

Hi fellas. Ever been a noobie to "The Hide" trying to search the wealth of information available at your fingertips only to get extremely frustrated with the limited ability of the sites "Search Function". Once you are not able to find what you are looking for you and all you bravery decide to post your first topic as a member of "The hide" only to have some "Know-It-All" asshole to reply "Search Function" for which you have already tried?

Well here is how I effectively search The Hide and other sites for info. I hope this helps.

Step 1: Go to Google.

Step 2: Enter "site:" plus the name of the website for which you want to search. In this case snipershide.com. (No Spaces)

Step 3: Add the parameters for the info you are looking for. I usually use a minimum of three, but you can use as many or as few as you choose. Just add a space between each term you want to search. (In this case: SPS Tactical Loads).

Once done google will pull up all pages that include the search terms provided(Most relavent first).
To use this with other sites simply replace snipershide.com with the website of choice and follow the same instruction.

Not computer savvy?? Click the link and add your own search parameters.

Really hard, most times, to tell which is worse........

Re: How to search SnipersHide effectively...

Good info. I also use the <span style="font-style: italic">Advanced Search</span> in Google which is useful for other sites that dont have the custom search too, ie AR15.com etc.

Seriously, there is a direct link to the SH Google search and it works pretty well.

Good luck!

Re: How to search SnipersHide effectively...

Come on where's the fun in that? The link really should be a sticky at the top of every subforum. I just love how people the post the same question that was in a thread on the same page.

And that's when you get told to use the search function, and to move out of your parents basement etc., etc.

The only dumb question is the one never asked...

P.S. if my parents had a basement, I might find this offensive, LOL

Re: How to search SnipersHide effectively...

I hate to say this and I'll probably get flamed for it, but so be it. [My response] is really more about hacking on the new people for not using the search engines. How many of you have ever really tried using any of the search engines (take your pick)? I have, and I have fairly reasonable Google-fu. If you're looking for something specific, IMO the search engines are little better than useless. I personally tend to prefer the original SH search engine over the others because it gives hits by post date, and I can usually remember the approximate time frame I saw a particular post. More often than not however, I find it easier to simply search back through a particular section page by page in an approximate post date time frame, rather than use the search engines.

This is because regardless of the search engine you're using, most common search terms will give you somewhere on the order of 3.649 x 10e14 hits. Seriously, who's going to look through all that to find what they're after? It's easy to hack a new person for not searching, but no wonder so many new posters appear to be asking first, rather than looking. Maybe they did try and simply got so many hits they didn't even know where to start. I am fully aware there are some that are just too f-ing lazy to even make an attempt, but possibly giving the ones a break that made an effort, but didn't find what they were after, might be in order.

Re: How to search SnipersHide effectively...

Great post. I have been trolling the site for a couple months reading and learning. Just got my Barrett 98b and the nightforce 5.5-22x56 will be here Thursday. I had no luck using search function and had no idea google would search a site like that. Thank you for posting for us pc illiterate noobs.

If you're using IE, that could be your problem too.

I disagree, it's less about ripping on new people and more about providing them additional tools and resources.

Re: How to search SnipersHide effectively...

Sorry for the confusion. I was refering to <span style="font-style: italic">what I wrote</span> in my response being about hacking on the new people, not the searching info described in the original post. I wholeheartedly agree that trying to provide new people (or longtime users) with better search tools is highly commendable and I definitely appreciate the efforts of those that make an effort to improve their quality. There is so much info here, it is a challenge to search it effectively, which is why I was suggesting being a little less harsh on the new people.

I'm just messing around. There is no need for asking a ton of the questions that are asked here on a daily bases because they are answered a million times. Some searching has to be done and its really simple.

Re: How to search SnipersHide effectively...

If a moderator or admin tells me to use the search function I will do so. I have not seen any of them do that in the short time I have been here. As a matter of fact the mods here are quite courteous and helpful unlike some of the "knowitall assholes".

I actually read a post here this week where someone was telling a new guy that everything that can be said about the sport has already been said somewhere sometime on here and there was no need to post questions. What a f'ing joke. If that were the case then Lowlight might as well shut down the site and let Google do the work. I kinda don't think he is going to do that just to please someone who is too lazy to help a new guy out. JMHO

Re: How to search SnipersHide effectively...

Stay on this forum long enough and you'll see why, and the search site will get you to your epiphany quicker.

Re: How to search SnipersHide effectively...

"new guys" would get less keyboard beatings if they read everything they can, even if it's something they don't have questions on to educate themselves on all the aspects of LR shooting. While doing this, I guarantee you will come across stuff you haven't even thought of, things you should know, and find answers to all your questions.

If you don't find your answer this way...
I'll bet that while you're filling your brain with knowledge, someone else will ask the very same question/questions you have within a week. You'll get a kick out of watching him get roasted, get your answer and say, "glad I waited and didn't ask that question!" It's worked for me.
