Hey guys. Sorry for the beginner questions.

I have a Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20x50 scope with their mildot reticle. Since it is a SFP scope, at what magnification power should I take the mil measurement at? Let's say I measure a 12 inch target with 1 mil. That puts the distance at about 333 yards. Well if I change the magnification and it measures .5 mils, than it is a distance of 666 yards. What is the universal magnification power on the SFP for distance measurements on my mark 4? Man I really wish I had a FFP!

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I am a beginner. Thanks for your time!

Re: How to take distance measurements with mildot SFP

Generally, the ranging power on an SFP scope is its highest magnification. Even if the mag ring indicates you're on a certain power though, it may not be exact and that will throw you off. You can do something like sticking a yard stick exactly @ 100 yards (have fun measuring that) and see if it spans 10 mils.

^ ^ ^ ^ what azimutha said using the yard stick or other precision measuring device, but with one additional tip: ensure the range to target is EXACTLY 100 yds.

To be precise, the distance measurement will be from turrets to target. Do not depend on a LRF reading or the local range saying "it's a 100 yds". Get a tape and measure the distance yourself. Now check your Mil scale at full power and ensure calibration, or find the point. At this time, you can also find the "50% point" of calibration if you think it might be helpful.

Good Luck,
