Is the short action 1:8 or 1:9.
What is the magazine COAL with the short action?
If you get the 1:8 only with an action that does not allow heavy bullets to be loaded long, you take away the benefits of the faster twist rate.
Mags are in the mail, I'll measure when I get them. The Howa is 1:9. I was going for a trainer/rifle for my kid, so I figured I would mostly be running 55gr ammo to keep it cheap/easy. I dropped by the indoor range on the way home from work today and shot off a box , man it groups well at 25 yards.
But, so far so good.2.56 is even shorter than SAAMI spec of 2.60.
What bullet do you plan on shooting and how far are the lands?

I have a Howa 1500 SA .223 (*24" Heavy Barrel) in a MDT HS3 chassis. I wanted the SA 1500 rather than the Mini since the SA has a longer and thicker barrel . The 1/9 is fine since this rifle is intended for shootin' prairie dogs. I just picked up the XRS II for this rifle but I don't have it mounted yet:
The only hickup is that the stock bolt stop is too short for the MDT magazines and it needed to be shortened to allow the bolt to travel far enough back to pick up the rounds. Did you have to shorten the bolt stop for the Oryx?
