Playboy's Hefner announces Christmas engagement

WASHINGTON Dec 26 (Reuters) - Hugh Hefner, the twice-married founder of Playboy, is taking the plunge again.

Hefner, <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="color: #FF0000">84</span></span>, said on Saturday in a posting on Twitter that he and his girlfriend Crystal Harris, <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="color: #FF0000">24</span></span>, got engaged on Friday.

"When I gave Crystal the ring, she burst into tears. This is the happiest Christmas weekend in memory," Hefner tweeted.

Hefner, whose magazine was founded in 1953, was divorced from his second wife, Kimberley Conrad, earlier this year. His first marriage to Mildred Williams ended in divorce in 1959.

Harris was the Playboy Playmate of the Month for December 2009.

Hefner, known around the world by his nickname, Hef, has championed sexual freedom and civil rights, published stories challenging McCarthyism and the Vietnam War, and backed gay causes and the legalisation of marijuana.

With a cover featuring a calendar photo of Marilyn Monroe, Hefner put the first issue together on the kitchen table in his flat. It hit the stands in December 1953 and sold 51,000 copies -- enough to finance a second issue -- and led to a multimillion dollar international corporation.

As much as I admire his capitalist success story, I often wonder just what screws are loose upstairs with celebs who lead such strange lifestyles. While maybe not quite as big a trainwreck as say LiLo or Charlie Sheen, I think it's safe to say that people who participate in this viagra-addled media circus are certainly not the most stable among us.

I *almost* feel sorry for people who have such a great void in their life that they must fill it with material belongings, coke, sex, booze, whatever. Then they spew off at the mouth about politics and it becomes clear that the void is frequently intercranial. It's a sad statement about our culture, if you ask me, that we commonly idolize the vapid and brainless "beautiful people" and slander the intelligent with terms like "nerd" and "freak". Personally, when I run onto people like that I just want to hit my head on the nearest wall... I wouldn't last a minute in the mansion (edit: don't read into that too much, lol).

Hef used to be cool as shit, in my book. But he dated a girl, Holly, for a long as time BEFORE this Crystal chick. Holly made it pretty god damn clear that she wanted to get married and he told her he was done with marriages. Holly was cute and nuts about Hef. I'm prettttyyy disappointed.

but thanks to Hef for getting me an 99/100 on my history final sophomore year. I made a mini-mockumentary about the Playboy mansion and my teacher was a total perv. Soo more like, thanks to the girls! He told me, literally, he took one point off because I wasn't in it. Gross.
