Stryker, you’re a solid guy I’m my book but you have no idea how a local Humane Shelter works. If you think they operate at a profit you are grossly mistaken. They are simply overwhelmed with far more incoming than they can ever possibly find homes for or have room to house. The comparison to Hitler and Jews is off base. No one at a shelter wants to euthanize an animal, but they are tasked to deal with an insurmountable problem and the result is hard to stomach. They try to place every animal they can, but if you only have 50 runs and 100 animals dumped on you, the ones that aren’t adoptable get euthanized to make room for ones that can have a chance. That truck full of dogs you saw is a sad reality, unfortunately. It happens far more than anyone not involved would ever believe because the problem is far bigger than most people would ever realize. It’s not my intent to try and change your mind, as your experience has clearly made an indelible impression, but I can tell you that the three County shelters I deal with in my A/O (Montgomery, Autauga, and Elmore in central AL) do the best they can with shamefully limited resources. It is a hopeless task. You compare them to Hitler, but it’s more like a Corpsman on Omaha Beach. They try to help the ones they can with their limited resources, and have to let the ones they can’t help go, otherwise the ones who are salvageable will be lost as well. And, as to my original point (which I’m not sure you took), the ads you see on TV begging for money are almost entirely HSUS (and to a lesser extent, ASPCA). They have nothing to do with local shelters and are liberal political organizations (although ASPCA does have some good and some bad, whereas HSUS is a pure scam). The only (few) ads I’ve ever seen for the shelters in this region are donated PSAs from the local stations, and they beg for people to come adopt a pet more than donate. There’s a LOT of stuff I hate about shelters, but I deal with them daily and I don’t have a better solution to offer. I’m not smart enough. If you do, I know they’d be grateful. But the fact is, the funding they get from their County governments is heavily competed for, and the politicians prefer to give it to things that will get them re-elected. Humane shelters don’t rank very high on that list.
