We needed the rain and we got a ton of it, it was just perfect timing for this hunt though! We could not access half the ranch with several feet of water and mud in most places. The bulls were bugling hard though and we were able to ambush these two coming from feeding to bedding areas. Congrats to the hunters! Not bad for free ranging Elk in far west Texas.

There is a small portion of far west Texas that has free ranging elk (estimated around 1600 animals). They are repatriating the area from New Mexico. They don't know they are not protected when they cross that imaginary line in the sand. Because of the large exotic trade/hunting/ranching industry in Texas (and a lot of ranches have imported elk for hunting) elk are listed as exotic species and can be hunted year round so long as the hunter has a valid Texas hunting license, but they were treated as a game animal until 1997. Historically, much of Texas was inhabited by elk.
