now i am getting closer to thinking i need some. i have a savage 10fp with a factory fitted HS stock. my question is this about the fit of it. does anyone have the same setup with bottom metal or any set up with a savage that the bottom metal sits flush with the underside of the stock? im just hesitant to install this without knowing about the fit. i did find some deals that expand the factory mags to 9 rounds, which is cool.

The system you have now is known as a hinged floor-plate. The only game in town for a Savage detachable magazine is Jeff at CDI Precision

You will need to send him your stock for some additional inletting to fit this bottom metal. You cannot simply drop a detachable magazine system into your HS stock as the inlet for a hinged floor-plate is too small.

Interesting. I thought only the McMillan version had a detachable magazine.

I'm afraid you're not going to like the CDI bottom metal then. It is not completely flush with the stock.

If you already have an OEM magazine system, why are you interested in replacing it? I've always heard good things about the Savage magazine system.

i believe all versions of the 10fp can be had either way, floor plate or drop mag. my main reason was the 4 shot capacity of the savage mags. i guess its not that bad. i was going to load up on mags, but they are pricey. though not as much as the AI mags cost.but if i buy factory and the extension, its about the same as an AI. as far as why i like bottom metal, actually i like the look of the bottom metal better, bigger mag release. i would think that the bottom metal would be made to be flush with the bottom of the stock. i know we are all working with different types, styles and makers. i guess thats what custom made guns and the smiths who make them are for. here is that mag extension http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/

The DBM on Savages is different than other DBM systems. IT is parallel with the barrel and action. So that makes it difficult to make flush fitting.

One thing to be aware of is with the stocks. If you have an Internal box mag setup now, the inlet will be inset a bit. IT doesn't look bad, but it isn't flush..the stock can be re-contoured and repainted if it bothers you.

The Factory DBM rifles have a much thinner belly to the stocks they use. I recommend buying Factory DBM stocks when upgrading stocks. HS Precision and Others make them for the Factory DBM systems. Buy them instead of the Blind mag stocks if you're worried about looks.

Here's a pic of my rifle with a McMillan A5.
