Two rural Iowa school districts are planning to offer firearms safety courses for middle school students this spring.

Clarksville and North Butler School in Greene will offer them for about a week as part of the physical education curriculum.

Hunter safety courses have been offered after school or on the weekends, but this is changing, and not just in Iowa.

Four South Dakota schools now offer them during the school day.

“A lot of kids now a days think that guns are something in video games and they need to know that there is a difference between a video game and reality,” Clarksville and North Butler School District Superintendent Joel Foster said.

Not quite sure how I feel about this. On one hand it may be a good idea to get teenagers off the video games and teach them about real guns, but on the other hand, it could be a very dangerous situation especially if the safety teacher is a fucking moron. As a parent myself, I would NOT want my kids being taught gun safety by some idiot like this one:

there is no situation where more education is harmful

there is 1 firearm for every person in the country....there is a good chance you are going to encounter one at some point in your life.

even if you HATE firearms, there is no downside in knowing how to safely handle one.

people cant claim "we need to do something!" when it comes to firearms deaths.....but then be against the idea of training people how to deal with them safely.

im not a fan of skydiving.......but if i was a pilot, ide make damn sure i knew how to use a parachute.

It is a good idea, if the instruction is competent. I don't believe we can rely on parents to teach kids much of anything today. How many firearms classes have you been to that didn't include a safety brief?

I teach all my kids about safety and handling. I feel more comfortable doing it myself than some stranger doing it.

Hunter safety is great but I teach that too and they just take the test.

Gun culture training begins in the home and no course will teach you that

Class should include a segment on what to do when there's a spent case burning down your neck hairs and a pistol in your hand haha almost lost some safety points last night

Do not break engagement with your target, continue to lockback.

Grampa up, it's just small scars with handgun brass.
5.56 scars worse, my grampa belly catches them when they go down
the front of the shirt.lol

A fly on the nose, now that is distraction.
