I went in to Best Buy yesterday to get a PDA to instal Nightforce or EXBAL (samething)and.........

THEY DONT SELL THEM ANYMORE! No one does except on the net the girl says well there is just no need cause there all on the smart phones now. I told he great what if I dont have a smart phone she proceds to show me them and then says there is a 30$ data fee on all new phones per month.

If the companys stop producing the PDAs beacuse its all on the phones then what. She says get an Ipod touch (apple)so now I guess I will start looking on the net.

E-Bay has them by the hundreds, and cheap to. Just make sure it has all the cords and such. Have helped a couple guys put together a workable pda ballistic calculator. I've used a Palm TX which has worked well. Sprint bought Palm so you might check at the Sprint store.

Get an iPod Touch, I run Ballistic FTE on it and my iPhone and it's a really good program. One recommendation is if you get the iPod Touch, get a good cover/case for it. I take mine out in dirty/dusty and sometimes wet conditions and without a case I'd be going through iPods pretty quick.

Ok this sounds good. Maybe we will run into each other and you can show it to me I live in rush. where do you shoot at?

The Ipod Touch is the route I'm going to go. The only downside I can see is that the Otter Defender case is currently no longer available for the Ipod Touch although Otter were talking about re inroducing it...

Re: I have gone over and over the PDA Ballistics thing

LoadBase 3 on my HTC Fuze Windows smartphone and Sony Vista laptop is terrific. It's hard to see how I willl need more than it offers.

Re: I have gone over and over the PDA Ballistics thing

I use the Palm Zire 22 with Exbal. I like it alot. The battery stays chaged for a month. The only drawback is it is hard to see in bright outdoor light. I have made cold bore shots to 1388 first shot hit using it so far. You will need a Kestrel weatherstation to complete the pachage. That said when nthis one croaks I'm getting an Android phone and running Litz's new software for 9.99. The bad part about the phone is it's expensive. requires a data plan and the battery is not going to last a month between charges.

Re: I have gone over and over the PDA Ballistics thing

I use the HP ipaq 211 with Exbal. Ran into the same problem about PDA. Works real well. Going to up grade it to FFS Delta IV soon.

Re: I have gone over and over the PDA Ballistics thing

I have two Zire 71 Palm PDAs that I would trade for just about anything if anyone is interested. I used them with exbal but upgraded to an Dell this year so they are sitting idle. Open to just about anything in trade. Hopefully it will help out a couple of shooters! Not looking for much.

Re: I have gone over and over the PDA Ballistics thing

I have an HP iPAQ 111 with the Nightforce ballistic software loaded on it as well as an iPhone with Ballistic FTE. I prefer the iPhone with Ballistic FTE for ease of use and also because they are constantly improving the program.

Im running the exact same Palm and the exact same system. I don't have the issues with the light though, mine works great in bright sun. They can be had very very cheap on ebay.

im running a free cheap software on my HTC phone as well, but honestly i never use it, the palm does its job just fine

Re: I have gone over and over the PDA Ballistics thing

I've been waiting to do an intro post since I joined but the info here is overwhelmingly good and I am struggling to digest it all. Anyway, I'm a civilian shooter who recently got into longer distance shooting. I like all of the technical aspects even though they make my hair hurt at times.

I run the KAC Bulletflight "military" program on an i-Touch. I waited for the KAC i-Pod mount and their dedicated Otterbox but decided to make my own. KAC's mount is out but you have to seek out the special Otterbox.

I made mine from SS rods and a small block of billet aluminum that mounts to the Otterbox Armor and is adjustable for height. The mount is LT's pencil flare gun mount. It mounts to any 1913 spec rail. BTW, by "made" I mean designed. I didn't do the actual machining. I shouldn't even be allowed to own a Dremel.

As to Bulletflight, it is good for me and I am still learning it. I use it from a Mk 12 SPR to a EDM SS-97 .408 Cheytac. The case and i-Touch are virtually recoil proof.

I know all the tech in the world is no substitute for solid basic marksmanship fundementals but this is more of a hobby for me and I'll take all the help I can get.

Anyway, armored Panasonic PDAs are all over the Net for sale if you want to go that way. But i-Touches are an excellent option.

Re: I have gone over and over the PDA Ballistics thing

Thanks, one of the other guys on here also mentioned that the case is available again.

Actually I am very pleased to hear that, as I've litterally just bought an Ipod Touch and a good case was next on the list, along with FTE.

Edited to add: Is the Otterbox Defender waterproof?

Regards,

Peter
