I've been running H335 for years and have decided to switch to Varget for temperature stability. I'm staying with 168SMK for now, but will be developing 175SMK loads for two other rifles.

If you use 168SMK/Varget, What's your load?

I tried search, but it's bringing me nothing I can use.

Yeah, look at the reloading depot tacked to the top of this forum.

I'm just going to throw out 43.0-44.0 grs of Varget might be a good place to start.

Start low and work up, then come back and tell us what YOUR rifle liked.

Also, get a couple of reloading manuals and read them, or go online and see what the powder makers are recommending.

Trolling for loads is pretty darn lazy if you ask me. What is safe, accruate, and reliable in one guy may very well be dangerous is yours!

If you have Federal Brass consult the Sierra Manual it used Federal Brass for their data work up.

If you have Winny or BHA brass consult the Hodgdon web, as they used Winny brass to work up their data.

If you have Lapua brass, consult the Hodgon web site and caustiously work your load up using that data.

42.5gr of Varget, is a good place to start!
I always had good luck @ 42.5 Varget under 168gr.SMK M210 primer.

That's in a 700 with a 22" M40 contour Rock Bbl.

I had better Luck, with the 168gr A-MAX. @ 42gr. Varget

The high velocity node with winchester brass will be between 45 and 46 grians and there is a slower one near the 43.5 area.

When I was shooting 168's I had great success with 45.5 grains in Winny brass. Never saw any real difference between different primers. I would be hesitate to use that same charge in Fed or Remmy brass though. Good Luck.

A very experienced shooter, gunsmith, and machinist guy I know from the local club uses 41gr of Varget under the 168SMK.

The Hodgdon book lists 42gr as the starting load.

But his 41gr load sure does work great.

Re: I need a 168SMK/Varget load for a 700p

Thanks for the input everyone. I guess I'll do it like I normally do:
*load up rounds in .5 gr increments from 41 to 44.
*group them
*chrongraph them
*pick a load
*use it for the next 10 years
