Houston now in Denton County
I’m not very computer savvy. I would like laptop between $500.00 and $1000.00. All I use it for is going to gun sites, YouTube, and of course porn. The ones I have the best luck with is HP. The one I got now is Dell. It sucked from the 1st day. If you guys can help me I would appreciate it.

Thank You
Don

Id say stick to HP. For basic use a HP is good, just remember, max out the ram if you can afford it. HP is good, MSI, Sager, Lenovo, and Asus is good. Acer is hit or miss. Avoid Toshiba, they’re not the reliable workhorse they used to be.
Edit: looks like Toshiba doesnt sell computers anymore. Also depending, a low to mid end microsoft surface could work well also.

HP is your best bet unless you want to take a chance on one of the high $$$ brands. I've never been a fan of Dell.

HP will do fine, my other pick would be Asus just due to them actually making many of the parts they use. HP envy line with AMD processors are actually a good value, look for an SSD with enough room and 16 GB of Ram. M.2 SSD is a bonus

If you can, wait until January. They will be dumping stuff that didn't sell over the Christmas season. I picked up a decent HP laptop at walmart last Jan that was originally 700, marked down to 450 for black friday, sat around, and was finally marked down to 200 clearance price.

Follow the link and take it to check out. No need to add anything more. They'll ship it free and even let you finance if over 12 months no interest. If you don't like it, you can return it within two weeks. You also get American customer service when you call. You won't buy another laptop for a decade.

With the new Apple chip, it's outperforming Pro models from just over a year ago and older. Won't matter to you but it does.

this is the one I’m thinking about.

The Ryzen 7 is the fastest of the group, but it is not needed for day to day tasks. If you want to spend the money, go for it. the Ryzen 7 is a 8 core part, the Ryzen 5 is a 6 core part. Ryzen 5 should handle anything you mentioned above with ease.

First decide operating system preference: MS vs OS or some may say PC vs Mac. If you use an iPhone, a MacBook is a great partner as they have so much shared ecosystem. Example: I take a pic on my iPhone, come and it magically shows in the photos of my MacBook called "Airplay". MacBook Pro's are super reliable and virus resistant. Good Luck.

Nothing beats a Mac. Costs more but worth it, and Apple has the best support in the business.

Not quite. 8gb of ram is fine. 16gb is overkill for anyone running what he plans on.

Important things in that price range:
1. M.2 SSD drive, nVME. This is what drives the 5 second boot times and snappy feeling all around.

2. 4+ cores. Ryzen 5 or I5.

3. Ram, 8gb is plenty unless you're video editing or gaming.

4. Screen. 1080p minimum. The are way too many cut rate 720 displays and even tft's still being used.

Only reason I would argue for 16 GB is chrome. It eats ram.

I have never needed the product support with Dell, and I've had them since 06.

Why is Mac so much better? When I bought my last Dell I spent $600. It took $1400 to beat the specs with a Mac. My first Dell was retired because the mb died, after 8 years. I'd call that acceptable for something with a 3 year warranty.

I hate iOS with a passion. First thing I would do is install windows on any Intel mac.

Firefox. Fuck Google....

Win 10 is very good at ram management. If you give it 8, it won't let chrome eat much, give it 64, and it'll let chrome eat 50.

Yeah firefox has ~4% while chrome has over 60% of users. You have to account for it for most people. Windows does a decent job, but I do not consider 16 GB excessive. 8 GB is fine, but the jump to 16 makes more sense to me that going the the Ryzen 7 (or intel i7).

I kind of like my laptops to have 32gb of memory when possible, but 16gb at a bare minimum.

You want a SSD hard drive (solid state -- no moving parts) and at least 16 gb ram to be fast and future proofed enough. Processor is not necessary to worry about, get AMD for better pricing. You'll also want to try out keyboards. If you're getting a Windows computer, Dell has the most universally liked keyboards. DON'T buy a laptop without trying the model out yourself somewhere. Some keyboards and trackpads are a fucking joke. Look for holiday sales including waiting until after the holiday to take advantage of open box returns (which will be fine, just opened).

Mac does not use IOS, they use MacOS and it runs circles around windows. I use both and despise Windows

Macs far outperform PCs with higher”specs”
Dell is the Taurus of computers

Work gave me a MacBook Air. It was slower than dogshit. Replaced with a dell that cost the company less and had far more of everything. Even a touch screen that I actually use. Been going 3 years of travel abuse. Everyone’s Mac is problematic at work. And slow. Trendy tho.

Sounds like your IT department screwed them up. I have been running Mac since before hard drives were available

My experience with anything Mac was they hide everything in the most obscure sub menu. Completely frustrating. Hardware matters. OS can't make up for a lack of power.

You realize Dell makes everything from cheap garbage to alienware? Skip the consumer line and go to the business class.

Everything desktop I build myself. Don't have that option or need anything crazy in a laptop, so a $600 Dell/HP/Acer is perfectly usable.

When you say hidden sub menus, are you referring to the Mac OS or that garbage Microsoft calls software?

Looks at my Sager with 6 core i7, 64gb of ram, RTX2080, 4tb of storage, easy accessibility for upgrading and replacement. Lol even the maxed out top end macbook pro doesnt even come close.
Edit: oh and it still has usb ports, built in hdmi, display port, usb c, and sd card reader.

Another ASUS fan here. After a few different ones I've settled on gaming computers. The graphics can't be beat. Add a big screen or a couple of screens and you're set.

I have had good luck with Toshiba Portege (now Dynabook). I used their base model from 2010 to early this year, other than maxing out the RAM and switching from a HDD to an SSD it stayed in the configuration it was sold in and worked well. I replaced it when I started my masters degree with another one (but not base model) and have been very happy with it.

I'm not an Apple fan, but my wife uses them. The new M1 Macbook Air is about the best value for the money available right now. But, it is also way more power than you need for your uses.

Looks like Dynabook no longer sells the $600 base model in the Portege. I'm willing to bet the Tecra is just as good, it is just a larger screen and chassis. The RAM is user upgradable, which is nice as it is much cheaper that way. And the hard drives can be replaced, which is also nice. Many of the laptops made now are a unified board and nothing can be changed out on them (unless you want to break out the soldering iron and risk burning something on the board).

Whatever you get, get something with a solid state drive (SSD). HDDs are glacially slow in comparison and even for your use you will notice a difference.

That Tecra comes with 8 GB, but supports up to 32 GB of RAM. Most manufactures will charge you $400 plus for 32 GB of RAM, but you can pick up two 16 GB cards for about $50 each (or $100 total), and that's for the high end stuff.

Avoid anything sold at big box retailers if you care about system and device-level security. My vote would be this: https://puri.sm/products/librem-15/

You can always skip the marketing and over pricing, and set up a secure system on about anything. The weak link is almost always the user anyway. But, if security is your concern, then run OpenBSD as the OS and encrypted the drive. For most of us, it is not worth the effort of learning Linux and it is pretty much a waste of time if the machine will be used to watch porn anyway. A good antivirus and backups will get you further.

The physical kill switch for the webcam is nice though.

Actually IF your computer is mostly used to research adult entertainment or visit other seedy sides of the interwebs, Linux is vastly superior to Microsoft products for your OS.

You can even do a live boot OS (DVD/CD or USB drive or SD card) for the OS, that saves nothing unless you specifically save a file to another storage device, so that when you are done with your visiting the dark side, a quick reboot and all good and clean and you don't have to worry about picking up nasties.

Not that you can't get hacked using Linux, it's just that most of the drive by stuff that is not specifically targeted at you, is designed to grab Windows users.

As a former programmer/coder. Go with a Mac, iPad’s are not terribly expensive and do everything and anything my entire attic of retried pc’s ever did. (Except run my C++ editor/compiler or MS Basic 7.0 editor/compiler but then I have been out of that stuff for almost twenty years.)

Go with the fruit company

(Just wish they would bring production back to the US).

I can't talk much about performance, but what impressed me at Apple was how fast some of the older systems were. Even an original Mac-Mini from 4 or 5 years ago still ran and performed really well. My 4 year old Windows laptop struggles to even start up most days.
