hello, this is my first post here so please bear with me..my dad is due to retire from the military next year..he is a proud military man and good parent..i know that when he was younger, he used to be a sniper until his eyes started deteriorating..i also know that he likes savage firearms but likes the feel of a remington 700 in a5 stock(my cousin's gun)..so as a gift for his retirement, i decided to look for a bolt action savage sniper rifle (this is the part where i need help because i dont shoot rifles). is there a way i can ask a gunsmith to build me savage sniper rifle on an a5 stock or similar? if yes can you please say the other stuff needed for the gunsmith to do as i dont know what process it takes for savage guns to be like a "sniper" rifle..thank you very much and God Bless America

Re: i need help for a build for my dad

There are some Great gunsmiths here and I'm sure one of them can help you. Savage makes a rifle that comes in a McMillan stock already (Model 10FCP McMillan). Not an A5, but still a McMillan that has the same vertical feeling grip. Good luck and tell your Father Thank You for his service.

Re: i need help for a build for my dad

Army or Marine Corps and about when did he serve as a Sniper?

With that info we can give you a better idea of what he carried when he was working.

Now if you want to just buy a suitable rifle then the Savage 10FCp McMillan is the way to go:

BTW, it's not a "Sniper Rifle" unless it was purpose built for that task or pressed into service hunting people.

Actually the stock on that model IS an A5. If you saw a Savage 10FCP with an A5 lookalike stock then it was probably the 10FCP HS Precision.

Ahh... My bad. My A5 has an adjustable cheek-rest so I thought that was a different model.

Re: i need help for a build for my dad

army..between 1990-2000..sorry guys.. i was never in the military so i'm not sure about the equipment he used..he did taught me how to use ar15, 1911 and a shotgun though..he said he doesn't care if i don't join the military..he just want me prepared just incase the country calls up for civilians to be servicemen in case of a massive military emergency.. thanks again..

Re: i need help for a build for my dad

I recently had a friend of mine build me a sniper rifle. Mine is a .308 on a Rem 700 action in a McMillan A-5 stock. I have a Krieger MTU #10 Barrel, Badger Ordnance recoil lug and trigger guard, Nightforce base and rings, Leupold Mark 4 LR/T scope, and best of all a Curtis Werries Big Chubby muzzle brake. The muzzle brake makes all the difference. Reduces so much recoil it is like shooting a bb gun.

Good Luck!

He would have used the M24 then. It's a long action Remington 700 in .308 with an H&S Precision stock.

If he likes the Savage action, then the 10FCP McMillan will be right up his alley. If he liked his M24, then the sky is the limit as far as what you can put together.

Any idea of your budget? This can get REAL expensive REAL fast.

Re: i need help for a build for my dad

1500 just for the gun..so if i buy the savage with the mcmillan stock..is it good to go out of the box as far as accuracy or do i still need to have a gunsmith fine tune it?

You'll will spend just as much if not more for good glass. It never hurts to get them "fine tuned", but in this case I would say buy him the rifle and give it to him straight out of the box. He will shoot it and decide what kind of tweeking it needs. Just remember you still need the base, rings, and scope just to get him shooting..

+1 on letting him shoot it first and letting him have it tweaked to his personal wants and needs. If you're going to go toward the M24-esque route, there are plenty of Leupolds listed in the optics for sale section right now that your dad should be comfortable using. A little while ago, there was someone selling the exact Leupold 10x fixed Mk4 scope still in service.

Re: i need help for a build for my dad

This is another option.
It comes in the HS precision stock, which is a very fines stock.
It is a 5R barrel, much like the barrel that was on his m-24.
If you were to get this, a Super Sniper 10x scope and SWFA mounting system, you would have a complete rifle package for right around your 1500 dollar limit.

Another option is the package deal from sniper central. It is a standard remington SPS varmint rifle in an upgraded stock, with a 10x scope, harris bipod and hard case.
If you were to select the MK 2 stock or the MK 2 adjustable stock (add 150 bucks), you would come in well under your 1500 for a complete system with a decent, though not spectacular scope (the super sniper is a better scope)

Re: i need help for a build for my dad

how bout the winchester m70? anyone have experiences with them? can it be costumized to have a stock like the Bell and carlson a5? Detachable magazine 5 or 10 rounds? and while browsing about the "big chuby muzzle break", I saw a video of a police sniper using one in his m70? I just found out that savage rifles can't be loaded by individual rounds from the top action? is this true? Once again thank you very much. I am also interested in buying one for myself. of course after this buy coz money don't grow in trees. hehe

Its easier than you think. Buy a savage of your choice, Call McMillan and ask them if the A5 will fit the rifle ( don´t know if it will) if not, they will make it fit for a very fair price. When you recieve it, it should be just a drop-in, you could have a smith do all kinds of fancy bedding and so on, but I would leave that up to your dad. And you might want some glass...

Re: i need help for a build for my dad

a few things. if you buy the savage in the A5 you can send it to McMillan for the goodies like the adjustable butt and cheek piece. and they will bed it for you too for a decent price. you can do too much with the HS, but its pretty good as is. no need to pillar bed it as its got an aluminum block, smik bedding will do. but the 5R in the HS with a good scope will be a great gift. i gave it to myself a few years ago. minus the 5R though

Re: i need help for a build for my dad

does the 5r barrel make any difference than a heavy barrel?..sorry for all the questions...just trying to learn as much as possible before I submit myself into buying one for him. Also for me in the near future i hope..

Re: i need help for a build for my dad

The 5R is a heavy barrel. It has "radiused" lands to prevent damage to the bullet jackets. It also supposedly aids in higher velocities, and easier cleaning.

Re: i need help for a build for my dad

I wouldn't call a 5R a "heavy" barreled rifle. It's more of a varmint contour. Also, the stock on a 5R feels completely different than an A5 (but does feel similar to an M24). The reason I thought of the Savage originally is because it comes with the McMillan A5 right out of the box. It's the least expensive way to get into the A5 stock. And you should spend as much as the rifle cost for the scope and mount. If you have the time to shop you should be able to have a very nice and pretty serious rig for $1500-$2000. FWIW...

Re: i need help for a build for my dad

Semantics.
A varmint profile barrel is heavier than a sporter weight barrel and also heavier than a medium contour barrel.
It is not as heavy as an M24 profile barrel, but then again, the M24 profile is not as heavy as a heavy varmint or no taper benchrest barrel.

I think the OP's Dad would be thrilled with either the McMillan stocked rifle or the Savage 5R.

Of course, also in that ball park is the Remington 5R.

Re: i need help for a build for my dad

so the savage 5R i see comes in an A5 stock for $1003 at buds guns. can the remmy 5R be had for that in the same stock? i thought i saw a link for that, but it could have been a different thread. anyone?
