If one wanted to get a different reticle than what it's manufacturer offered, is it possible to do so and who would be the company to do it? I've never really heard of someone doing it but in my mind, it is feasible. What say ye

In case you were wondering, I'm talking about changing the bull shit mil quad in a 5-20HD swfa

Well, the answer is that you would ask the manufacturer if they can change it out. Many can. When they can, they might only be able to do certain swaps. This is something you would pay to have done. Prices are in the $200 to $700 range for some the scopes I know of.

I've had Leupold do it everytime I asked. I've had Burris say no everytime I asked. Depends on the manufacturer and the scope line. Burris didn't say they would never do it. But I was asking about the XTR2 scopes and they said "not for xtr2 line".
And yes, it costs extra I've paid between $250 and $600 for L&S reticle changes.

I would happily pay 250 for a better reticle in the swfa 5-20HD but i would bet they wouldn't do it. I was hoping there was another 3rd party that does it.

There is nothing wrong with the SWFA mil quad reticle. Didn't you get a nice plastic card with the subtends?, lol. I would like to know the history behind it though. I still prefer the regular mil dot. I do have the SWFA 5-20 on a magnum heavy rifle. Probably the best place for it.

You know reticles are a preference thing. I didn't get that card with mine but I know the subs. The milquad just isn't pleasant for me to look at. Would love an SCR or skmr2/skmr3 reticle. My 5-20 is also on my .300wm

I agree. It is cool as shit but I don't use any of its intended usage. I wish I could find the patent on it. It may shed some light. Even 8541 was a little confused on its complexity, which tells me it is too complex, lol.

    Speaking solely for Burris brand:
I've been told that when it comes to illuminated, etched, front focal plane reticles, the work required approaches the value of the scope, especially if there is a license for the reticle. Burris still offers swaps on old hunting style reticles but those are wire reticles, non-illuminated and rear focal.

I liked the rect. makes some real precision possible with that floating dot. There were other things about the scope I didn't like.

Scope companies are able to keep prices low by not making changes for every Tom Dick and Harry. Just like Ford - You can have any color you want, as long as its black. Its not just a funny saying, it keeps manufacturing costs down.

You want 100% customizable scope with a plethora of knobs, tube, zoom zoom and retc, you order a USO. They are and have been for along time the only company that caters to whatever you want. Everyone else for the most part keep custom stuff nonexistent to keep pries down.

    Good Luck

Dial one mil left or right and you do. I only did that a couple times on a KYL paper target, but it worked great. 99% of the time you don't need that kind of precision.

That being said my fav retc is the SCR and I wish they make a tree version already.

I really like the SCR as well. Im putting my buddy who's just getting into LR shooting into a Steiner T5xi with the SCR. It was between him getting that or an SWFA. It came down to the reticle. SCR wins.

If you could find a third party company with the capabilities to do it that would do it, it would be a one off deal and you could probably buy a few S&B’s for what it would cost lol.

It’s not as simple as taking the scope apart and putting a piece of glass in with a different etching. You’re talking about measuring and making a specific sized piece of glass for that scope, with a reticle etched for that scope, by a company who has no experience taking apart that scope or specs for parts.

If the manufacturer of the optic doesn’t do reticle conversions and offer what you want then your only real option is to sell and buy what you want. Most of the companies that do this charge about $500 too. More if you’re getting a Horus reticle with the liscencing fee.

That's what I'm saying. I fucking hate the mil quad. those 3 and the ebr7b are my favorite reticles.
I like the mil quad somewhat and I’m willing to live with it because that scope is perfect in every other way except for zero stop.

It’s good for quick holds at short/medium range, but it doesn’t excel for really precise holds.
