I just got a beginning handloading setup for my 308 and are now in pursuit of powder. I am not really interested right now in trying a bunch of powders to work different loads with. I want a powder that can be used to gain experience loading better than factory ammo. I'm not chasing benchrest accuracy, just want to see some improvement with my own ammo. I have heard Varget is good and I have loaded with IMR 4350(if there is no powder called that, disregard) before on a friend's setup. I already have some 110 vmax from along time ago and probably will move to 155 amax soon. Rifle is a 20" with muzzlebrake Savage.

Re: If you could only have one....

For the lighter bullets like the 155 palma or scenar, I use H4895. But Varget or RL15 will suit your needs for the 308 in general.

Varget, IMR-4895, RL-15 are the big 3 for .308, that are common.

IMR-4064, VV-140, VV-150, AA-2520 and H-4895 are others.

Re: If you could only have one....

I don't think you could go wrong with Varget, IMR4895 or RL-15. You could throw H4064 in as well. They are all proven performers. Varget is probably the most popular. I have been using RL-15 for quite a while now. Before that it was H4064 or IMR4895. I have yet to try the magical properties of Varget, but I imagine some day in the future I will. They are all great powders.

Re: If you could only have one....

If I could only have one, it would be IMR-4064.

It's very good for the .308 in all reasonable bullet weights (up to 180gr), likewise for .30-'06, and is my goto varmint load powder for .22-250. The others work too, but I think the 4064 is just more versatile.
