That is exactly what my friend and I do. I carry the rifle and he cleans up the groundhogs with a shotgun if we get to close to. Its a great system.

I suppose I should've bought it while it was FS here and I had more money.

Interesting choice! Isn't the 94 the old lever action saddle gun? Killed a lot of deer with them in 30-30 but don't think I ever saw one chambered in 308.

Ditto on that. Mabey in Scout configuration.

Re: If you only had one rifle?

If I could only own one rifle, I would pick a Winchester Pre-64 .30-06. I would top it with a nice Leupold Vari-XIII and would guess it would do about anything I ever wanted it to.

That said, thank goodness I am not confined to just one rifle! LOL

Ha ha. Thats great Aughtsix and everyone who's smart respects old dogs and thier opinions. My dad would have been right with ya brother. He always told me the Garand and the BAR won WWII, he made four landings in the Pacific.

Indeed it is. I'd like to see it chambered in .308 for the availability and range of bullets available. If I could get one of these, I might be tempted to leave my M1A in the safe. I need a good saddle gun, or one I can pack around with me when I go hiking or hunting that isn't necessarily going to weigh me down as much, but that can still offer quick follow-ups. One of the things I like about lever actions.

Kinda like this one...

Re: If you only had one rifle?

Winchester used to make a 94 in 307win.It was basicly a rimmed 308.
Can't use pointed bullets in a tube mag though.
There out there if you look around, you just gotta be a handloader,307 is gett'n impossible to find.

Re: If you only had one rifle?

I was thinking about the 150gr soft points, but uncertain as to whether or not they'd be a risk (either way). If not, I'd be just as happy to take one in .30-30.

Mind you, it'd be just as easy to run the same setup in a Browning BLR with the DBM, chambered in .260 Rem or .308 Win.

Re: If you only had one rifle?

The hornady Leverevilution ammo is about the best I've found for either of my 30-30's and at $21 a box there not all that expensive. Its my brush gun for deer drives and the like.

Re: If you only had one rifle?

Round or flat point bullets only!!!
The Hornaday soft is designed to flaten out under heavy recoil,a run of the mill soft point[pointed]is not.

If you have to have pointed bullets, then run one in the chamber and one in the tube, but don't stack them in the mag.

We used to have a 336 Marlin at the shop,we keep it on the counter so people could see what happens when someone put a mag full of ballistic tips in a tube mag and touched if off.The guy got thru 3 rounds before the last two lit off.A very luck guy,the discharge went forward and burnt his left hand and left a chunk of wood in his last three fingers.
He wanted his money back,he said it was a defective rifle????
That same guy blow up a S&W model 19 double load'n 38's in it.He said he figured if its a 357 then it should handle a double loaded 38.Well,he was wrong, and again lucked out.It blew the top of the cylinder and top strap up and away from his face.He wanted his money on that too,so we told him to call Smith.I guess this wasn't the first S&W he'd blow'n up,and they told him they'd buy it back if he signed an agreement not to buy there product.
We also told him we would no long sell him any firearms, and he should go play the lottorey.

Now THATS something that everyone needs.

Re: If you only had one rifle?

For you Winchester lever guys looking for a full sized cartridge, how about an 1895 in 7.62x54 or 30-06? [Lever guns need exposed hammer's IMHO] If I ever find one for a good price with the peep sights I'm sure taking it home - If it was good enough for Teddy Roosevelt, I figure it's good enough for me!

Re: If you only had one rifle?

How about a gas piston AR-10 in .308 with a heavy barrell and a acog. That ought to cover CQB and distance to 600yd, plus stay fairly clean.
If we take defense out of the equasion I say a Surgeon XL action with a pair of bolts and barrells, one for 308 and one for 338lm. With a USO on top.

Re: If you only had one rifle?

One rifle only and for everything?

It would be a .22 Savage. I will sure put a lot of food on the table, shoot competitions, plink, etc. and all that without disturbing my perfect musical hearing...lol.

Re: If you only had one rifle?

i would have to answer this by listing the favorite of all my guns....my daniel defense 14.5 HB .....this little bugger does .75 @ 100yds hot or cold, carries 30 in each clip and has plenty of power when you put the bullets where they need to go....not the best long range choice, but if something is too far away, i just sneak in closer

Re: If you only had one rifle?

I hope I am never faced with only having one rifle but if I was the choice would be very easy. AK-47. No free man should be without one.

Re: If you only had one rifle?

The one in my hand.

There really isn't any purpose in these type of questions because no rifle can be equally well suited to all tasks. If anyone finds such a combination, please let me know. I am sure I can scare up some investment capitol because it would be the best selling rifle in the world.

If it ever came to the point where I could only have one rifle, it's because I couldn't CHOOSE what rifles I wanted and had to use what I could grab. Then WHAT I have is less important that how I intend to use it.

If you practice core skills instead or practicing playing with expensive toys, then you can translate your skill to platforms that are not equipped with the bells and whistles. This is why I have such rifles as the M1 Garand, iron sighted AR15, and plain-jane AK47. If you can master those types of weapons, then you can do well with whatever you end up with.

I like my toys too, but the skills have to be there first.

Re: If you only had one rifle?

Tromix saiga 12 guage. I can wreck anything under the sun with that. Make doors, kill food, kill groups, and spew lead quickly in the required area. I feel that the shotgun is probably the most violent weapon ever created.

Sub 150yds... game over.

Krieghoff Trumph drilling with free floating rifle barrel. A friend has one in 12x12x7x65R that is a true .5moa rifle with 5-shot groups. He has two zeroed scopes in real qd mounts and a 22lr barrel that fit in one of the shotgun barrels. The really weird thing is that the 22 barrel has a 50m zero with the scope set at 100m zero with the 7mm.. This contraption cost more than 3 AI AW complete with hiend optics..

That sounds AWESOME!!!

Re: If you only had one rifle?

If ammo availability was not an issue, I would pick my 1954 Enfield No 4 MKII. Rifle is simple, excellent quality, one of the smoothest bolts I've operated, accurate, and packs a decent wallop.

Otherwise would go with Remington 870 18" 7-shot shotgun. No one should be without a shot gun!
