I have some nice plans when I return such as reloading as well as some nice hunts. I have a decent sized pistol collection but only a

Howa 1500 .308 w/ NikkoStirling Junk (to be replaced)
w/ Harris Bipod
w/ Hogue Stock (McMillan T1 to replace it)

Savage 99e .243 (stock)

If you were to pick a couple of nice sticks to add to your collection, what would they be.

Must have the following

Be a semi common caliber (i.e 223,.300,6.5 but nothing like 6.32456x54.235)
Purchased from a store (prefer in person)
Good foundation to build up to a decent piece

I know of all the nice customs but I want to start small before buying a 2800.00 "starter".

I am thinking of buying 1 or 2 Howa 1500 .223 for me and my 14 year old son. I like how it feels for such a minimal buy in.

Re: If you were me...

I would have to agree with the Howa being a good place to start especially since you already have one. I know there is an aftermarket trigger in brownells for it.

Manners or McMillan under your Howa should do fine until you feel like a proper 6.5 build is in order. Get a good stock and good glass and have a blast!

Re: If you were me...

I would agree with a good stock and trigger. If you were wanting to spend a bit more, go for the Rem 700 SPS in your choice of caliber. Add a stock to it as the factory stocks are cheap plastic tupperware. If you wanted a more complete shootable package, go for a Rem 700 LTR or 5R millspec. This will cost you around $1K just for the rifle. The stock is OK, so you probably won't need to trade it out right away. You will want to put some quality glass on it though. It all depends on how much you have to spend.

Re: If you were me...

Cost isnt an option but I dont feel the need yet to have anything very expensive cause I dont know the overall purpose yet. It looks like I may make a move to AZ when I return so right now I want to build a universal long semi long (5-600)
range shooter.

My Howa .308 is gonna get
McMillan T1
SWFA SS 10x42 Tactical

Im sure my buddy Sabre Cat will be able to weigh in on my toys now that we have figured out my kids new CZ452 Cadet.

Re: If you were me...

I'm not sure what a McMillan T1 is, but know that you can get any of the A-series stocks inletted for the Howa.

Also, if price is no issue, you might want to consider the 3-9x variable SS or the 10x42 HD Tactical- they have .1 mil clicks that match the reticle instead of 1/4 MOA clicks.

Re: If you were me...

If I were you, and I would buy a couple tikka varminters in 223 or 22-250 one for me, and one for my 14 yr old son. I would top them with Sightron SIII 3.5-10's. all that's after you suggested I do so.

Re: If you were me...

Tikka heavy barrel varmints are excellent. Next would be the 5R 700. First choice would be Tikka with a couple extra 6 round mags or 10 round mags.
Most importantly clean well and clean often like every 12 rounds and it will last a good long time.
Never let propellant residue cool in barrel. If you do it becomes abrasive which imbeds on first round down bore cold barrel and the barrel is then scored ever so slightly with the embedded residue on bullet jacket.
