I'm Gonna Have to Cheat on Her...

Well, it's been about six years since I've had my JP LRP-07. She came with the JP "Super Comp" trigger, which is a 3.6lb, single-stage design by JP. For all intents and purposes, they are good triggers, especially when you take the price into account. For the last few years, I have always recommended the JP Comp trigger when someone has asked about a quality, single-stage AR trigger.

However, my brother recently got a Seekins SP10 and it came with a Timney Comp trigger. That is a damn nice trigger too.

It's been six years since I had that LRP built. There has been a shit ton of AR triggers that have hit the market since then. I never thought I'd cheat on JP, but after squeezing that Timney Comp, I think I'm gonna' have to.

That being said, what's everyone liking nowadays? Right off the bat, I'll state that I am only considering single stage triggers that are on the lighter end of the squeeze-weight-spectrum. I am actually leaning toward the Timney Calvin Elite. I had one in a bolt rifle. It had a little bit of creep to it, but the break was amazing. However, I'm also chewing up the CMC 2.5lb single stage, Wilson TTU and the AR Gold. I have read that the reset on the Gold is fairly mushy. I have heard and seen the reset on the TCE, and that thing has an emphatic "click," which also looked rather tactile on the video I watched.

I've got an SR-15 that is in need of a trigger. Personally, I think the KAC two-stage triggers are pretty shitty, so it's the first thing that goes when I get them. I am going to put the JP Comp in the KAC. Whatever the new kid on the block ends up being, it's going in the LRP.

What do you all think?

I have tried the Geissele 3G and it is awesome.

Light, super crisp, short travel.

I prefer single stage feel myself.

I see no reason it wouldnt work for precision shooting.

A guy that was a regular at the local rifle match had a Calvin elite in his 6.5 creedmoor AR rifle. He doubled that trigger at least once on every stage he shot with it. It was so bad he started using a single load sled instead of a magazine. That said, I don't think it was the trigger. I think he was trying to be super light on the trigger, jumping off of it as soon as it broke (instead of pining it back through recoil) and inadvertently doubling. Yes, that's user error, but something to be aware of all the same. Light triggers with short reset and little overtravel may be easier to double.

I’ve seen many an improperly installed timmeys go class three on guys trying to shoot small groups.

Hard use rifle? Skip the timney. Range toy? Have at it but do your due diligence.

I got a hyperfire trigger 2# and I really like it. It has a cam action and twin springs that is supposed to have enough umph to ignite rimfire too. Something to consider if ya think you might play with that in the future. I have it in a 17 rem ar I built and it is a marked improvement over my mil spec trigger. It’s my first aftermarket trigger though so one could argue I’m not the most experienced. I was also looking at jewel and could get 2.5# for 70$ but spent almost 200$ for the hyperfire to be adjustable from 2 to 2.5# and be able to fire rimfire in the future.

Had the Timney in a SP10 and replaced it with the TriggerTech AR Diamond. Also own an AR Gold in a 3-gun AR.

The SP10 Timney Competition is a good single stage trigger, and definitely has less pre-travel than the AR_Gold and TT, but I thought it was a bit heavy for overall pull weight on a precision rifle, so I opted for an adjustable 2-stage trigger instead.

The TriggerTech and the AR Gold are both great triggers, adjustable for pull weight, and are very similar in pre-travel and reset. For me, I prefer my AR-gold just a tiny bit more, but its a slight difference at best.

It's all different shades of preference really. I'd probably recommend, that you try out a single stage vs a 2 stage trigger, and determine which you like better before buying.

My 2 cents.

I really like the Velocity's I have in mine. 3 lb in AR-15's and just put a 4 lb straight in my LR308. During some testing I put the 3 lb in the 308, couple of doubles and a triple... didn't know my shoulder would act like a bump stock, LOL 3lb was really nice prone or off the bench but a might too touchy off hand. Needless to say I bumped it up a little to the 4 lb.

While it does not compare to the one lb trigger that sits in my bolt rifle, I am pleased with every Velocity I have ever bought especially the one that now sits in my LR308

My current favorite AR trigger is the Wilson Combat TTU3G.
It breaks very consistently on my scale at 3-1/4# and though it is listed as a two stage the first stage is very tight and feels more like a single stage to me.
It's used mainly for hunting on my 68spc.

I run AR Gold in all my AR's, but they are technically a two stage. Your more then welcome to test drive mine. As soon as I finish my New Grendel I'm going to give the Triggertech AR Diamond a go. For a single stage I would recommend the Timney CE just for the modularity. It's very rare to find a trigger you can ergonomically adjust for yourself. I know one of the guys that works at Timney so if you want it set to a heavier pull weight I can put you in contact with him.

Another vote for the Hiperfire triggers. I have the 3G on two of my ARs and they feel just as good, perhaps better, than the JP in one AR and the Geissele in another. Actually, another Hiperfire is going to replace the Geissele as soon as possible.

Cheers, Richard

Own Timney's, CMC's, Rise Armament, JP, and Hiperfire. Tried AR Gold, TT (not the Diamond), Geissele's and Elftmann.
Timney CE is top for a precision rifle hands down out of what I've tried. You can NOT free recoil with it though, a small frame gun will easily double or triple, I imagine a large frame will be worse.
I don't care for two stages so some pretty good triggers get a thumbs down from me even if they deserve a good review.
The CMC 2.5lb would probably get my vote as a good all around trigger that I could use on an every day gun and not feel like I was giving up much on the opposing precision or safety ends of the spectrum.
I'm still baffled by the Geissele cult following though, I haven't tried all of them but I've disliked every one so far, with the 3G as my least favorite aftermarket trigger of all time. Its exactly like a DA revolver trigger and horrible for precision.

Thanks for the responses all. I meant to include the Hiperfire (forget the exact model) and the Triggertech Diamond in my list of potentials.

I do have a couple Geissele triggers in other rifles: SD-E and SD-3G. I prefer the 3G. I also have a Larue MBT, which, I have to admit, is a pretty decent trigger for the 90.00 he’s asking for it, though it is a little heavy for my tastes. I am curious how the Geissele National Match triggers are, but I’m not wanting to spend 300.00+ to find out.

At this point, I’m still leaning on the TCE, especially because I can get it for a decent enough price. As stated by @bigjake83 I can always increase the squeeze weight if necessary. However, if I am doubling up on shots, my fundamentals are fucked off (not following through) and I need to revert back to square one.

I have two shops near me that have these sample lowers with various triggers in them; one shop has Hiperfire’s and the other has Timney’s. Unfortunately, they don’t have any of the others...
