Hick Town PA
I just picked up 2 new rifles for an outrageous deal. One is a Weatherby Mark V chambered in .270 and the other in a Stevens 200 chambered in .243. Im pretty set in building a shorty tactical .223 out of the Stevens but what should I do with the Weatherby? I really like the TRR rifle but not for 4K I don't. I picked up the Mark V brand new SS synthetic for $300 due to family issues from the other party. Good price huh;) The rifle will be used for long range past 1000yd and hunting on occasions given the right property to launch one at a deer at that distance in PA. Ideas on caliber, stocks, barrels, exc. Never built on a Weatherby before. Good/Bad, Pros/Cons.

As for the Stevens, Im looking at a B&C tactical medalist and a SS barrel of choice cut to 18" and fluted, SSS bolt, SSS Tac bolt knob, SSS trigger, EGW or Badger 20MOA base and glass is still up in the air but really thinking about the 6500 Bushnell for the time. The rifle is basically going to be used for moderate range groundhog/varmint hunting and just target shooting. Thanks guys.

Sell the Mk5 and use that to fund a build. The Mk5 is fast but, thats about it. Very long free bore and a crap shoot in the accuracy department. Your also stuck with Weatherby ammo or handloads, thats it.

As far as the Stevens/Savage, the bolt face is wrong for a 223, you'll have to change the bolt nose out if it's just like the savage, if not, the 223 is out.

I'd sell both for a profit and build the rifle of my dreams. Good luck.

Welcome to the Hide.

Not to be gruff, but why on Earth would you want to go through the trouble of converting a .243 to a .223? Different bolt face, mag dimensions, etc... If you want a .223, then start there. Otherwise, you already have an excellent varmint caliber and I suggest you stick with it.

No experience with the Weatherby, so I won't say anything there other than look at 7mm for your long range caliber options.

Have you shot either rifle yet? If so, how well do they shoot as is?

Re: Im new here and looking for opinions on 2 builds.

Well the Stevens is a savage 110 basically so it should be simple to change to a 223. Reason for going 223, i love the cartridge, how it shoots and I have plenty of reloading supplies for it. As for the Weatherly, I may just sell it for a custom action. I knew nothing about their actions and theres not much info on them being used in a target or tactical situation

Re: Im new here and looking for opinions on 2 builds.

Good luck with that and let us know how it works out for you.

I'd still just buy a new one in .223 for $300 before I went through buying and installing a new barrel and bolt only to fight with feeding problems stemming from different internal box magazine dimensions.

Sell the WeatheredBee... and stick with the Stevens as it is in the .243 caliber. If you have never shot a .243, I highly recommend that you do. I wish I would have gone that route a LONG time ago.

There are SOOOO many different grains/types of bullets that you can choose from (almost too many) to cover anything you wish to do with it. I would honestly sell the Weatherby and put those funds to glass or reloading supplies. Stevens would also need to be put into a better stock.

Shoot the crap outta the factory barrel, and invest in a match grade barrel, or even a factory varmint contour. I absolutely LOVE my Predator Max .243, and will even more when my Manners T3 gets here. You will not regret it!!

The 243 will serve your purposes well until you shoot out the barrel. Or go 260rem or 7-08 and never look back. Both calibers can be pulled back on grain weight for varment (I don't pull back grain weight myself I just turn them inside out with 162g bullets

). I would sell the Weatherbee and use that to buy a savage 10fp in 223, put it in a medalist or even their montie carlo so you don't have so much weight to it, just have it pillar bedded and be done with it. I have built many stevens so if you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Good luck,
Merritt

Re: Im new here and looking for opinions on 2 builds.

The .243 is an amazing cartridge. The only reason I wanted a .223 is because I sold the ones I had, I already have multiple .243’s and I can shoot my work ammo through it if needed. I just thought I’d spend $30 bucks for the bolt head rather than loosing possibly more than that if I’d trade up for a .223 as others were saying since I would be changing out the bottom metal anyways.

And thanks to you guys, I will be selling the Weatherby and have been giving it serious thought on purchasing a custom action, Surgeon, Lawton exc., with the money. Thoughts on this?

Thanks for all the info from each of you. Im always open to any criticism as Im trying to learn as I go.
