I've got access to a full machine shop w/ everything I need to work on my guns. I paid someone 150$ to thread the barrel on my .300 a couple years ago. I got 2 .223 cal cans last year and up until now all I've used them on are my ARs and .22 pistols. I also have 2 .22-250s. This one is my oldest one. I took a couple online classes and stripped this thing down, chucked it up in the old South Bend lathe and threaded the barrel. Really wasn't that difficult although it was rather intimidating. But it was successful and after pulling the rifle all apart and reassembly the POI was only off 1/2"(that's no can to can)! It was down to the barreled action in the lathe. I'm happy!

Check out toolingu.com, you can look through their curriculum and pick 2 courses to take for free. I've never paid them anything and finished threading on an engine lathe and benchwork and layout operations. You'll probably need to supplement the course w/ some basic books to learn what everything on the lathe is and what it does. I sure had to. It's something that interests me, so I plan to learn as much about it as I can.

The undercut on the barrel is just .002 below thread depth. I just stopped the tool in the undercut and then got rid of the line the tool left with a different tool.

Thanks! It's definitely a great feeling. I've got a bbl blank that's going to go on my .300 soon. Gotta cut the chamber and all that. Gonna get some help on that one, don't want it to be a 300$ lesson!

Re: I'm pretty proud of myself!

Not too bad, especially for your first. Couple of tips though. Cut a 60 deg chamfer on the thread entrance so the suppressor threads on easier. And dont cut the thread recess deeper than the minor diameter.

Re: I'm pretty proud of myself!

Thanks for the tips, I'll keep that in mind when I do my other one later this month. A friend of mine loaned me Darrell Holland's Professional Machine Shop Course on DVD so I'm breaking into that right now. He said it cost him about a grand, so I'm grateful to him for letting me borrow it. It's good to have friends!

Thanks man, I'm about 1/4 of the way through the course I borrowed and just learned that I could have had the lathe turning A LOT slower during the threading operation! Had to be quick like a bunny!
