I have a chance to pick up 8lbs of either IMR 4064 or BL(C)-2, and can't decide between the two. I will using the powder in .308 and .223 to push 168-175gr and 68-77gr bullets. I know BL(C)-2 is a ball powder and will meter better, but does the temp insensitivity of the 4064 make it a better choice? I'm shooting here in GA, where temp swings can be 30* or more in a single day.

Re: IMR4064 vs BL(C) -2

Thanks for the info! I have very little experience with 4064, and my only hesitation was with metering on a Dillon 550B. My plan is to use it primarily in my .308s, specifically a 5R and AR10. I'd like to crank out a few hundred rounds for my AR10, and I actually have a Johnson QDS for the Dillon (but have yet to take it out of the box).

How does 4064 deal with temp swings compared with Varget?

Re: IMR4064 vs BL(C) -2

In .308 with 168s, Hodgdon's original promotional materials showed Varget with virtually no change from...20F to 100F?

I just don't remember and the archives are behind a bunchastuff waiting to be rearranged in the shop.

WW 748 showed the most difference in velocity. 4064 was in the middle.

If it ain't green stuff from Australia, it's going to vary in velocity with temperature.

But I use 4064 right now.

Re: IMR4064 vs BL(C) -2

I use 4064 to reload everything from my 6mm to my .270, .30-06 and .308. Never had any issues and always produced very accurate ammo with it. I also live in GA and have never had any issues with temperature sensitivity, however I also don't chrono very often. On the other hand, I've had little experience with BL(C)-2, so all I can speak for is what I do know which is the IMR powder.

Re: IMR4064 vs BL(C) -2

I'd go with 4064 out of those two choices. BL(c)-2 is a filthy, fouling powder that is extremely temp sensitive from my experience.

4064 is also a good powder for .30-06 if you have one, especially M1 Garand.

Re: IMR4064 vs BL(C) -2

i use them both on a regular basis. You will be hard pressed to beat 4064 in the .308. I'm not sure about the filthy part of BLC-2, I just like the way it meters in my 550. It works very well with 55 gr. Horns. Will be trying it with 75's next.

You'll be hard pressed to get more than 25.5 grs. of 4064 in a .223 case, but you wouldn't be going that high in a heavy .223 anyway, as I recall.
