hi everybody. I just picked up my first rifle this past week, i went with a savage model 111 in .270 win. and it came with a bushnell scope. http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/111FCXP3

i shot it for the first time this weekend and enjoyed it. i'm questioning how good this scope is.

little background..... i was raised in a liberal family, no guns, and had gone shooting a handful of times before i finally decided to pickup a gun this past week. illinois laws suck so i went out to indiana (kingsbury) to shoot, and will probably be returning there in a few weeks. i wish i had kept some of the targets i shot, nothing great, but it was my first time shooting a scoped rifle... ive been reading the stickies trying to learn, and i do have alot to learn...

just wanted to introduce myself, pleasure to be here!

Re: introduction.

welcome. glad you are getting into shooting. most package guns dont have the best scopes and none have the type you need for long range shooting. but thats no big deal. they make them everyday and will gladly sell you one, lol. but shoot often, start reloading and read and search as much as possible. feel free to ask me any questions.

Re: introduction.

ive always wanted to get into it, and now that i have the resources....

around my parts you are lucky to find a 200 yard range... my buddy is a member at a club that has a 200 yard range that i will be shooting at in the near future....

im thinking about a picking up a nikon prostaff, it seems like my best bet for $150-$200, and it fits all my needs.

and ive been looking around for bipods, but not sure which one to get. any advice there?

Re: introduction.

if you plan on any long range stuff, you will want something with exposed target turrets and mildot reticle. as far as bipods, the new rage is Atlas. for the rest of us po' folk, we use harris usually, lol. the 6-9 swivel model with notched legs is the standard it seems. there is a sponsor to this site that has prices that are hard to beat. its Triad Tactical. best price you will find.

Re: introduction.

Give the Bushnell 3200 10x40 MilDot a look...You should be able to find one of those for around $200. I have one on my 308 and it has been fantastic(especially for the money). Welcome aboard!

Re: introduction.

i ended up picking up a harris bipod at cabelas. it doesnt have the notched legs which is a downside, but you can lock down the legs at any height. i believe it was $70. thing was easy as hell to install. took me less than a minute to put on, and its light as hell.

can't wait to get to the range next weekend, gonna put atleast anothre 100 rounds downrange until i determine if i need a new scope. if i do im thinking the bushnell 4200 3-9x40.
