Iphones on the battlefield?

Re: Iphones on the battlefield?

A lot of individual soldiers use smartphones, iPods on the battlefield. It's probably the most common single solution device you will find across all branches.

Now, in terms of hacking and use, you have to look at who we are currently fighting -- third world nations with less than educated bands of fighters loosely grouped behind a very localized cause. Not China with it's teams of hackers. When that problem comes around then you might see smartphones move off the battlefield but as long as the enemy is less educated then an Australian, British or US poverty level citizen -- smartphones are everywhere including in combat.

ah, fair enough thanks. The old threat modelling chestnut.

There's a guy in Aus that retrofitted an RC plane with a mobile phone booster since phones automatically lock onto the closest signal even if that signal is coming from a kids toy flying over head. It was just a novelty idea, to show that it could be done. Not sure he would have had the gear to decrypt the data he was relaying though.

Re: Iphones on the battlefield?

Don't be so confident in cell phone security. My wife can pull up a google earth map showing my current location. These phones are far from secure. All you need is my phone number and password to my account to have the same info

And please, don't ever underestimate our enemy. They may be lacking in some of the large scale technologies our government is using but they are far from stupid. It would not be hard to locate a loose lipped soldier in country through Facebook or another social network, get his phone number, and somehow break into their phone account. It could be done from any internet cafe.

Our enemy has a huge network established across the world with many resources including tech weenies. We are not simply fighting a couple of cave dwellers.

A little off topic, but many of your identity theft rings are traced back to these third world countries such as Nigeria.

To think that because someone is poor they must be stupid is just simply naive.

That said, their are many great shooter applications on the Iphone and droid networks; just use them with caution.
