Rifle Scopes Is a 16 x 42 too much?

I'd say too much. That range 2-7 or 3-9 is plenty. With numbers like 16x42 my main concern would be the limited exit pupil. I like big bells not so much for their light gathering, but more for their exit pupil at higher magnifications.

WAY too much for what you will be using it for. On my main hunting rig, I have a 4.5-14. I think that is even a bit much at times. I have a 1-4 and 2-7 on a couple other hunting rigs. They both work well for deer sized game, and the vast majority of my shots are within 100 yards.

Get a variable 4-16... 4x is perfect for 100 yards, and 16x is enough to get out to 800

im assuming your looking at a SWFA ss. I ran that scope for my competition rifle and it served me well until I made the jump to my current USO ST-10. If I was you I'd go with the 10x or 6x. Both will do exactly what you want them to. I'd stay fixed power in the 300.00 price range and wouldn't go variable unless I could get a FFP, so that means a swfa 3-9 or a PST.

Thanks Merritt- I have a Nikon 3-9 on it, seemed fine at 100 yds at the range the other day, but I have to imagine it ain't worth diddly at 300+ yds?
