Looking for a base for my 338 Edge build, I'd like to have the capability to get out to a mile+ but will probably shoot more often from 1000-1250yds. I absolutely want a 100 or 200 yd zero on it.

I've got a Supersniper 16x in hand which is going on it right away, it has 122 MOA of internal elevation adjustment. I plan to eventually put a NF NXS 5.5-22x50 on it when I get the $ saved up. I understand the NXS has about 100 moa of internal up adjustment.

So I'm trying to decide how much elevation to get in my base, the numbers look good for a 40 moa base with 100 yd zero.

Assuming the NF gets mounted with a conservative 40 moa of UP, a 20 moa base would be like 60 moa up, and a 40 moa base would be like 80 moa up, and both should be able to get a 100yd zero.

JBM is showing I'd need about 65-68moa of UP to get to a mile, so I'm thinking the 40 moa base is the way to go.

Any opinions? Anybody used a 40moa base before and what's the down side?

I have a 45 moa base on my 30-06, with a MK4 16X scope. It has 20 or so remaining moa "down" from a 100 yd zero.

I've been meaning to put the SS16X on there and see how it goes. I think it will be fine as far as getting a 100yd zero, and enough travel to make 1 mile (about 75 moa with my load).

My MK4 3.5-10x40 is about 4" high at 100 yards with the erector screwed all the way down, on the 45 moa base, and that scope has about 82 moa internal.

Well seeing that the NF 12-42x56MM has only 45 MOA of adjustment, I would really be surprised if you could get a 100 yd zero with a 40 MOA base. It really does pay to read what the manufacturer prints, before slapping a 45 MOA scope, on a 40 MOA base.

Since the 5.5-22x50 or 56MM has 100 MOA ( a full 55 MOA more) of adjustment, just what is your point?

What I've read is you take your total MOA for your particular optic and divide it by 2 and then go to the closest base DOWN. This means that if your optic has 45 MOA of adjustment you would half it which makes it 22.5 so your base should be the next one down from that figure which would be a 20 MOA base. For the 100 MOA optic also mentioned you would get 50 for half of 100 so a 45 MOA base would be ideal for that optic. At least that's how I've seen to figure out what is best for your optic.

To be honest if you get a NF their internal MOA should cover 1500 easy.. And if the scope you have now has a 122 MOA internal adjustment I doubt you'll need a 40 MOA base.. Maybe a 20 MOA but those scopes should be able to handle it on their own with that much MOA adjustment.

I have a Bushnell 4200 6x24 Tactical (50 MOA travel) with a 40MOA Nightforce base.
I am a 1/2 minute off the bottom with a 400yd zero.
longrangesupply.com has them in stock, or did a couple months ago.
