Suppressors is it bad to leave ammo is a magazine ?

Re: is it bad to leave ammo is a magazine ?

No.

My duty and off-duty handguns stay loaded 24/7.

There is no problem for ammo or weapon. I do suggest that the ammo be fired and replaced once a year. Ammo can tarnish and corrode if it's exposed to moisture and not wiped down, however it would take some serious neglect for it to get to a point that it would not fire.

IF you ever get ammo that is tarnished or corroded, replace it. Never attempt to "polish" or clean duty/CCW ammo. Shoot it or toss it. Some cleaning methods can result in duds.

i told him he ought to get a better gun than the hi point , not that it doesnt go bang every time but its a large gun . probably close to the size of a desert eagle ? but 4" barrel . i think i got him liking the idea of a 357 revolver told him he could just use my 44 . he has a ccw but only sometimes has it in the truck . when we go pick up the m44 taurus i think to look at their ccw size semi-autos.i like a 45 acp better it doesnt feel as snappy as a 40 s&w .

Re: is it bad to leave ammo is a magazine ?

..

It is not the ammo, but rather the spring.

Its complicated, it depends on the spring, the compression percent, age, the environment, etc.

Look, there is a simple solution:

1. If you have enough mags, swap them regularly.

2. Just unloading and reloading the rounds in the same mag can extend the life remarkably.

Everything stated about the ammo is correct, you would not believe the age and condition of ammo that can be successfully fired with no ill effects.

Re: is it bad to leave ammo is a magazine ?

In general, no, it should not be an issue. As long as the mag is kept clean and dry. Obviously if foreign material gets introduced it would make sense to clean it out.

There are plenty of stories of mags being stored loaded for decades and then fired without incident.

Re: is it bad to leave ammo is a magazine ?

Assuming you do not live in an environment where the ammo is likely to corrode you will be fine.

Magazine springs wear because of the number of load unload cycles they go through. They DO NOT wear because they have been compressed.

To check the springs you can simply slide a round slowly out the front of the magazine until you can grab it with your fingers. Quickly pull it out of the feedlips and make sure the following round snaps into place. If the second round is sluggish or appears to hang up then replace the mag springs.

+1 to LW mentioned. Duty and Carry guns are all loaded 24/7...no problems.

Re: is it bad to leave ammo is a magazine ?

I've always heard either leave it loaded or unloaded. Constant loading/unloading will probably wear the spring out faster than being compressed/uncompressed.

Re: is it bad to leave ammo is a magazine ?

Another another note, loading and unloading the same round from the chamber frequently is frowned upon. We have experienced the bullet getting shoved back into the case from hitting the feed ramp. If you load a round and then unload it, put it at the bottom of the magazine.

Back on topic, leaving the magazines loaded for extended periods of time in ideal conditions has no adverse effects on the ammunition. Unless your firearm is soaked with oil, it'll be fine. We have thousands of officers that only shoot and clean their weapon once a year and for the most part, their sidearms work when the qualify.

Ease up with the logic ya might scare some folks .

Re: is it bad to leave ammo is a magazine ?

Numerous police officers lives have been saved by HiPoint handguns. I can't tell you how many of those POS I have placed into evidence.

I value my life enough to spend a little more on the weapon I may have to use to protect it. The local gunshop sells a lot of them. I would bet most sit in sock drawers and only see the light of day again when they are stolen.

If it works for you....great. I will stick with a Taurus .38 before I would touch a HiPoint. The little Taurus revolvers are great.

<--------I agree there, but you got to love when the drug dealers get into a shootout. He with the higher quality pistol generally survives...LOL

Re: is it bad to leave ammo is a magazine ?

FBI statistics that I have seen says the first shot and first hit usually win. Of course you have to have something in your hand that goes "bang" instead of "click".

We get "shots fired" runs all the time because they will go out in the alley and "test fire" their pistola.

Re: is it bad to leave ammo is a magazine ?

There have been reports that XD mags will bulge if left fully loaded for long periods of time. I couldn't tell as I don't own what but that is what some instructors told me. Buy Glock and keep your mags loaded.

This is contrary to my personal experiences. I've seen springs in modern magazines wear out because of use (compression and decompression) but not typically just from sitting around being loaded. Thus, to "swap them" by unloading and reloading overtime will wear the springs out faster.

Again, just my experiences.

Re: is it bad to leave ammo is a magazine ?

CCW = Sweat + body oils
Add firearm and ammunition
Heat + salt + metal = corrosion.

Clean and lightly oil the CCW weapon at least once or twice a month, periodically inspect the ammunition (case mouths and primers) for corrosion.

Re: is it bad to leave ammo is a magazine ?

get some wolf springs and worry less. i agree with one of the first posters. change ammo out at least once a year.

It's not just your experience it is a fact.

Springs do not wear out due to being in one static position or another. They wear out due to cycling. Think about it this way. your car could sit in your driveway forever and the springs would be fine, however after hundred thousand miles, those springs have millions of cycles on them and they are worn....mag springs (or any other gunspring) is no different. Use wears it out, static compression does not.
