Mosin barrels do vary a lot. If you are concerned about slugging the barrel, use a cast bullet, .311-312 and 8 grns of trail boss powder and shoot it into a tub of water. The trailboss will get it out of the barrel, then mike it.
If you only want to use jacketed bullets try 308 & 311 and see which one shoots the best in your rifle.
Mine mikes out at .309, it shoots 308s pretty good, but 311s a tad better.
