Range Report JLKs 130 grians

Re: JLKs 130 grians

Swampworks states that the 130 gr. JLK has a BC of .620. The Lapua scenar 139 has a published BC of .615. The 130 should have higher velocities out of the same gun when loaded to the same pressures so it should have a slight advantage in flight as far as wind drift and drop goes. However, Swampworks notates "??" after the published BC for the 130 on their website. I could not find any explanation for the "??" so I'm thinking that the published BC is an estimate on their part.

I can only guess that the differences would probably be so small that it would come down to which bullet is more accurate in your rifle and the cost and availability of the bullets.

Re: JLKs 130 grians

I shoot a lot of JLK's in .223 and .308. In my experience they don't like to jump, and they love speed. Don't get hung up on BC: compare, using your ballistics program, two bullets at the same velocity, one with a BC of .615 and the other .620. Not much difference, right? As was said above, the advantage of the lighter bullet with roughly the same BC is that you can push it faster. And that's where you gain, big-time. Seat JLK's to the lands and start them there. In good barrels the JLK's I have tried are better than Scenars, meaning that they take less wind and score better on target when shot at the same velocity.

Re: JLKs 130 grians

You can compare the ballistics in JBM using the Litz models.

The Scenar has almost the lowest BC of all the 139-142 gr. 6.5mm options when these are derived the same way.

130 Berger VLD 0.552

140 JLK 0.639
140 Berger VLD 0.612
140 Berger LR BT 0.592
142 SMK 0.588
140 AMAX 0.584
140 Berger BT 0.559
139 Scenar 0.557
140 Nosler 0.550

A 260 shooting the 140 JLK @ 2850 fps. has the same drop as a 6.5-284 shooting the 139 Scenar @ 2950 fps., and actually beats it in wind drift.

They're better.

Re: JLKs 130 grians

Which is better depends on the round. In a 6.5x47 the 130 is better in my experience. In a 260, some prefer the 139, but I know two top winning shooters firing 260 that load the 130 Norma. There must be a reason they do that.
