OK, I'm just throwing this out here:

I think we would all like to have voters ID's checked for fraud and whatever, then why should we be so opposed to having ourselves checked out before we purchase a fire arm?

Don't get me wrong, but I'm just trying to link up our rights as set forth in the "Bill of Rights".

Just one other thing, when the "Bill of Rights" was created, the only thing the standing armies had that the civilian populus did not have was artillery.

I don't think I could stand up to an A-10 with my .308 Rem. Vortex Viper FFP, ACIS stock with Jewell trigger and make a whole lot of difference.

Just some thoughts on this. Don't jump on me as a liberal.

Just sound, logical and judicial thoughts, please.

Voting does not require a background check, therefore it is nothing like buying a firearm. This is essentially comparing the proverbial apples to oranges. A voter's ID in my state is given at the same time as a Driver's license. A Driver's License here will show: Age, Photo, and certain Pre series numbers are used for identification of felons by crime type. When one receives the DL, they are requested to sign for a Voter's ID card that is used with a photo ID to vote in the local elections. This is nothing like the database that is checked for a background check when one purchases a firearm or has one transferred. The multitude of serious questions that are asked on that particular form are no where near a voter ID/DL form.
The second amendment states clearly, such that a child can understand it,'...the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." As all my boys used to say as early as about 5, and still do,"What part of 'shall not be infringed' do they(people) not get?" They even think the reasoning for Class III firearms is an infringement(I agree), and think that all law abiding citizens should not require any permit to carry concealed or open. Have they been brainwashed by me? No, they have been given all information, read very well, adn apply solid value thought to all things to include religion and politics with their own opinions.

Voting ID could be compared to maybe a Drivers License or basic State ID since the information is taken from one to the other

In MA gun registration is done online. Someone wants to transfer a gun without an FFL in state they must go online and complete and FA10 transfer form to record the purchase. Currently there is no NICS check for private sales. I'm unsure if filing the FA10 results in one being performed on both the seller and purchaser.

If they can computerize that process they should be able to computerize the NICS check and make it accessible to the non FFL to use. Let me go online, enter basic info - name/date of birth - and the system will either return "No file on Record" or "Prohibited Person". The failure of NICS has been at in-putting individuals - particularly those with untreated mental illness - and bringing law enforcement action against prohibited persons that knowingly try to defeat NICS. I think a first party accessible system to be relatively unobtrusive and it would give the seller a sense of comfort. Unlike in MA the national system will not require any type of firearm info to be revealed it solely confirms whether or not a prospective buyer is or is not a prohibitted person. "Trust but verify" that follows a philosophy akin to requesting ID for the most important part of our political process.

Regards the present day firearms owner vs the A-10....

The Taliban and the Iraqi insurgents dont have them either yet despite fighting against the finest military in the world such forces dont need to win tactically. They only need to sap the political will from the government that sends them there. Giap understood this. A small ill equipped force is capable of defeating a larger better trained/equipped force. You may never sweep the battle field through tactics but if you get the mall crowd with no skin in the game back home to cry "No Mas" you win strategically. It all comes down to who wants it more and the opinion of the people bleeding and dying does not carry the most weight in that decision.

Lets say just hypothetically, that the current powers that be, have no ill will towards gun owners, and genuinely want to help curb crime by registering our firearms. What is to stop the next incarnation of,"the powers that be" from using that info to bear ill will towards gun owners?
