I was a BRM instructor for 15 years. I taught the M-16, M-60, and the SAW. None of these weapons have scopes. I know nothing about them at all. I have a scope on my 30.06 at home but never really thought about how it worked. I looked at FAQ's above but didn't see this question. (probably because it's so stupid everyone knows the answer but me)but on a lets say 10X scope. Does that means the image appears to 10X closer than it actually is? So at 100yds the target would appear to be at 10yds? at 1000yds the target would appear to be at 100yds?

I ask this question because I'm thinking about buying a scope. I use to shoot out to 300 yds with the m-16 open sights all day long. So if a 10x would make a 1000yd target look like it was 100yds away then I think that would be all I would need.

Ya'll see where I'm going with this?..........feel free to call me a dumb ass but after the flaming could you try your best to answer my question. Thanks.

Re: Just a stupid ass question!

Your math is correct.

However, if getting a scope, go with a variable like a 4-16 or something. The extra magnification does come in handy as does the option to take it down to 4-6x when needed.

What's your budget for the new scope?

DUMB ASS!!!

Kidding! Everyone has to start somewhere- much better to come in admitting you don't know than pretending you do!

I agree with everything Jason said. As a matter of fact, my person opinion is 1.5x per 100yd is about ideal.

Re: Just a stupid ass question!

I have bought an Nikon Monarch 2.5-10X44. 75% of my shooting will be 500yds and closer. There is a range up in Arkansas that is not to far from me that I plan on going to to learn more about the scope and longer range shooting. But here where I live in Texas about 500yds is all I can get. Its on a high line out near the river bottoms. A few of my friends like to keep tabs on the hog population there. I plan on joining them pretty soon.

My thinking was if I can shoot consistently out to 300yds with open sights I should be deadly with a scope that will allow things to look like their 100yds or closer.

Re: Just a stupid ass question!

You'll be very happy with that Nikon. Ive had Nikons' on everything from 22's to just recently a 50 BMG Barrett and have nothing but good things to say about them. You're right on, a 2.5-10 is an ideal choice for anything 500 yards or less and even walking shots up to 1000 if you're feeling good. I had a 3-12 on a 5.56 and was plinking away at 8'' plates at just over 500 yards.
